Coke Chunhawat

I got some news from Coke Chunhawat’s Team after his stoppage victory over Parwez Ghulam. Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat is continuing to train hard and ready himself for a the 2nd leg of the Journey Fight tournament held by Calgary Canada’s Trevor Smandych. The 2nd part of the 8-man tournament will represent a rematch for Chunhawat as he faces off against former opponent Matt Embree of Siam Number 1 gym in Toronto, Canada. Embree is a very lanky fighter for his weight and was a very game and competitive opponent for Chunhawat in their first match against each other.

Bangkok Fight Night 9

Atlanta, Georgia’s Khunpon Dechkampu has announced completion of his coming card for Bangkok Fight Night 9 which features an even blend of MMA and Muay Thai bouts.  Khunpon has made his mark as a trainer by giving the former champion’s tutelage to standout fighters Chike Lindsay and Stephen Richards. Lindsay in the past has won IMTO Super Welterweight World Title and the WKA Super Welterweight North American Title but is probably best known for his competitive fight with WBC Muay Thai champion Kevin Ross. Ultimately Lindsay would lose the fight.

Richards fought and beat at the time WBC United States light heavyweight champion Shawn Yarborough despite breaking his arm in the course of the fight. The victory netted Richards a WCK win but not the WBC Muay Thai United States title.

Bangkok Fight Night 9 should be an interesting proving ground to see which emerging young talent Khunpon has to reveal to the United States. The card represents a fairly even blend of MMA rules bouts and Muay Thai rules bouts with essentially a main event bout in each style.  The card known thus far along with weights of the fighters is as follows:

Joe Schilling, WBC United States super middleweight interim champion

Joe Schilling recently fought for and won the WBC Muay Thai super middleweight United States title, the interim one.  To quote the official WBC Muay Thai blurb on the event: “It took just 2.13 minutes for the new USA Muaythai sensation Joe Schilling to capture the national Super Middleweight interim title against Chase Green by TKO. “

Not for a lack of fighting and giving exciting stoppage victories Schilling has yet to be granted a shot at the WBC Muay Thai USA title, not the interim one. Recently, Joe Schilling has expressed his frustration at having to fight qualifier after qualifier while a title match with United States title holder Jared Lara seemed perpetually out of grasp.  He further expressed his frustration at being ranked behind at the time number one seeded United States Thaiboxer Eric Utsch.

Now WBC Muay Thai has announced that the bout should happen with 6 months or less and that Lara had not made any title defenses recently due to being injured.  Apparently, this information was verified to the satisfaction of WBC United States Ranking President John E. Baker PHD PE. However, it’s become public knowledge that Lara was training for the Respect in the Cage MMA event held March 12th, 2011. Lara did in fact fight and win this bout by first round knockout.  It would seem Lara was not only healthy enough to fight but was healthy enough to knockout his opponent while wearing a 5 ounce MMA competition glove.

It seems internationally Schilling for his part has kept very abreast of what is happening internationally and has already eyed Steven Wakeling the newly crowned WBC Muay Thai world champion.  Not long before Wakeling’s promoter Bernard Caplin speculated on what may lie in the future and has speculated on a lack of opponents at the super middleweight limit.  It looks like Schilling is willing and able to fill that space.

Time will tell if Schilling gets his chance at Wakeling or the United States title and as an indicator the article published by the WBC makes it no easier to predict with the recent drastic shift in WBC Muay Thai’s own international rankings.

Oktagon 2011

Oktagon 2011 has wrapped up and the results are in and hopefully the full event will be at some point replayed on http://www.livefightcode.tv/page/FullFights. The big name filled card was as exciting on paper as it was to view live via stream. Cosmo Alexandre Vs. Giorgio Petrosyan was close but Petrosyan did enough to win under modified Muay Thai rules but speculatively had this been a Muay Thai match the outcome could have been a different result.

The bout between K-1 MAX standout Yoshihiro Sato and Giorgio Petrosyan’s brother Armen was a closely matched fight.  Armen Petrosyan produces a narrow win on points and shows much of the good timing and precision that has become a defining style for both Petrosyan brothers.

Harrison Vs. Saenchai 2

Fight Sport Industries and Dan Green return and affirm what is becoming common with the United Kingdom’s biggest promoter by bringing an equally big card. As hyped many times prior Saenchai Sinbi Muay Thai will return in a 2nd match between he and UK standout Liam Harrison. Saencahi has in the past commented on how he enjoyed his first fight with Liam Harrison because Harrison would use the same technique that Saenchai would use on him.

Both have been very busy with Harrison competing in Thailand in the very well received Thai Fight super tournament where he fought and defeated Japan’s Soishiro Miyakoshi but was disqualified for not making the required weight limit.  Notably Harrison still defeated Soishiro by knockout. For his part Saenchai has been busy in Thailand fighting again and defeating Nong-O though the fight was notably closer with some critics viewing the fight in favor of Nong-O. Despite being injured Saenchai has acknowledged that he is healing quickly and should be fit for competition against Harrison.

Capital Punishment 4

John Wayne Parr has made it publicly known that this will be his last year of competition and that he will retire.  The first bout Parr will be a part of is his match with Greece’s Mike Zambidis on the Payback Time 3 event. And already a second event has been announced for Parr.

Scheduled for July 30th, 2011 John Wayne Parr vs. Vuyisile “Cheetah” Colossa will be the main event for Capital Punishment 4 In Canberra, Australia. Parr is among Australia’s most decorated Thaiboxers ever as well as having competed in Japanese promotion K-1 MAX in the promotions pinnacle of competition level.

Vuylise Colossa of South Africa has also been very busy internationally and has notably fought Thailand’s Yodsanklai 4-times, defeating him once. Colossa now lives in Hong Kong, China where he has been active competing in Muay Thai, MMA and Wu Li Feng events. Colossa’s last Muay Thai competition was against Yodsanklai in the December 5th, 2010 King’s Cup tournament as part of the King’s Birthday Celebration in Thailand.

Co-headlining the event will be Big Ben Edwards who is scheduled to take on a yet to be announced European fighter, who like Edwards is a veteran of K-1 competition.

Also on the card Canberra upcoming young fighters Josh Tonna takes on one of John Wayne Parr’s Boonchu Gyms fighters in a Thai boxing bout.

There is expected to be announced 12 fights of  Muay Thai, Kickboxing and MMA to complete the card.

Xplosion 2

The Xplosion 2 Aftershock card wrapped up on Saturday the 5th of March, 2011 and some of the results have already been reported. Kieran Keddle emerged victorious in his fight against Francois “Karlito” Charles of France.  With this win Keddle adds more championship gold with the IKF Muay Thai world championship  being added among his accomplishments.

Journey Fight

The Journey Fight Series 140lb 8-man tournament completed last night at The Century Casino in Calgary, Canada. The Journey Fight series is the work of new promoter Trevor Smandych.  By all appearances the event lived up to its expectations and is well on its way to becoming an event people will continue to talk about. Especially with 2 more parts forth coming in this ambitious tournament.

The advancing fighters to the second leg of the tournament were an even mix of Canadian and American talent.

Siam Number One’s Matt Embree of Toronto, Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat of Oakland, Josh Palmer of Halifax, and Pennsylvania’s  Justin Greskiewitz made it into the 2nd stage of Journey Fight.

The results are as follows:

Josh Palmer wins vs. Mark DeLuca

Justin Greskiewicz wins vs. Nate Smandych

Matt Embree wins vs. Rami Ibrahim

Coke Chunhawat wins via stoppage vs. Parwez Ghulam in 3rd round.

The second round of the tournament on June 11th, 2011 could be interesting as Coke Chunhawat will be matched against previous opponent Matt Embree.  Justin Greskiewitz will in turn fight John Palmer. Speculatively, Coke will likely want to assert his will and continue on something of a stoppage streak that he has been on lately having now stopped 2 opponents in a row.  The first opponent being Battle of the Desert opponent Scotty Leffler.

I cannot help but continue to be impressed with the ambitiousness of this promotion and how Trevor seems to have a inherently good sense of good matchups and how a meaningful card like this helps Muay Thai as a whole on this continent.

MTTA National Championships

By all accounts Muay Thai Association of America’s (MTAA) National Championships brought the fireworks with a card that could have been named Texas versus California. In this instance it proved to be California that came ahead at the end of the card.  Joe Schilling wins the WBC Muay Thai National interim super middle weight championship and presumably becomes the first logical challenger for the WBC Muay Thai super middleweight national titlist, Jared Lara.

Artem “The Russian Experiment” Sharoshkin prevails over Saeksan Janjira student Boorzoo Honargohar by unanimous decision. This makes another win in the young professional fighter’s continuing career and another valuable addition in his win column.

Title Wave

The announced Immortality 4 Fight night on March 26th, 2011 has been postponed until June 2011. Reportedly, Invincible Promotions  have chosen to move their Immortality 4′s date to be able to bring their audience a bigger and better fight card with a presumably suitable larger scale main event. More information and a confirmed date will be posted soon by the promoters.

Instead, taking place on March 26th, 2011 will be the Title Wave event. Though it is soon to say what match ups are already made, what can be expected is that one or more of the faces focused on in the poster art which includes Von Badato, Michael Badato, and Steve Moxon will be the main event fighter. Of the possible main event participants the competing weight of 67 kg with Michael Badato, 75 kg with Von Badato, or 72.5 kg with Steve Moxon is ripe with possibilities.

Moxon was  last seen in action against WBC Muay Thai Mexico champion  Luis Bio who he defeated by unanimous decision in December 18th, 2010 at the WCK and Tony Chen promoted Wu Lin Feng rules (essentially sanda rules) and Muay Thai show held over the course of 2 days in China.
