Nathan Corbett Scheduled to Appear on Domination 5

By Mike LNg

Nathan "Carnage" Corbett

It looks like its official now that Nathan “Carnage” Corbett has truly become a heavy weight.  Nathan Corbett will take on Pavel Zhuravlyov of the Ukraine for the World Kickboxing Network (WKN) Muay Thai  Heavyweight World Championship.  For those of you less familiar with Pavel, he has made prior appearances on K-1 even defeating Gokhan Saki who is regarded by many as the new K-1 heavyweight ace. Even prior to K-1, Pavel was a very decorated Muay Thai fighter and has more than an ample supply of ring and title credentials. WKN has a significant presence throughout eastern Europe so it’s no surprise WKN is beginning to import some of that talent to Australia.  It’s also becoming a better known fact that some of the world’s best Thaiboxers may lie in waiting in eastern Europe without much exposure to the west and the world. Maybe this is the first step towards expanding that exposure to the rest of the world with a fairly high profile fight in Australia.

Nathan Corbett has fought and beaten a virtual who’s who of Muay Thai cruiserweights including Kaoklai Kaennorsingh and Clifton Brown. This is literally a step up in weight and Pavel is a good quality opponent. Corbett dominated his part of the world in the cruiserweight division in fairly definitive fashion while in Europe Tyrone Spong made waves at the same weight. Both eventually met at Champions of Champions II in what was to be an inconclusive match with fouls and much controversy. Corbett is noted for his punishing elbows that have also resulted in highlight reel knockouts.

WKN appears to be acting on the opportunity that has now opened up with more and more Australian fighters no longer exclusively fighting for WMC.  It’s strange though that only WKN world title bouts appear to have full 3 minute rounds. I am still not sure what to make of that format but it’s definitely out of line with what other sanctions are formatting for rounds and for myself initially; I don’t like it. For sure many eyes will be watching the WKN for what happens under their sanction next.
