Amateur Muay Thai
Details regarding the court ordered dissolution of the old Muay Thai Association are beginning to emerge as accurately guessed the fight for changing Muay Thai to a single word and watering down Muay Thai’s national origins continue in an attempt to make Muay Thai an Olympic sport.
Sakchai Tapsuwan, the president of Amateur Muaythai Association (and former Secretary General of the World Muay Thai Council) has renewed his respective organization’s push for Muay Thai as Olympic event. I reported early on the 5 year long enduring court battle finally coming to an end with IFMA being the sole authority. However the fallout of the decision is still in process. Santipab Intharaphat president of Amateur Muay Thai Association of Thailand recently announced that long outstanding payment due will be made to all boxers before dissolving Muaythai Association of Thailand.
The Thai Supreme Administrative court accepted only Amateur Muaythai Association because it has been approved legally by Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT). The association still has many missions to complete.
Lastly, Mr.Sakchai told about another important plan of the association. That was creating “Road Map” in order to push Muaythai towards Olympic Games. Initially, it has to be registered as a member of Olympic Commission of Thailand. Formerly, Muaythai Association of Thailand, led by Mr.Santipab, was a member. Plans will still proceed through with the newly formed MuayThai Association as confirmed by General Jaruek Ariratchakarn.
Santipab Intharapat, president of the soon to be dissolved MuayThai Association addressed some of the accusations levelled at him in the long court battle.
- About taking 50% share from sportsmen Santipab said: he was not involved in this point. It was an agreement between coaches and boxers. Moreover, the coaches did not compel boxers to share the money. They share willingly.
- Hiring a coach without background, or is called “Ghost Coach”, this case was not possible. However, he hired female coach to take care of sportswomen because she can understand women more than male coach can. In addition, such female coach has been working with the association for more than 10 years. She has been trained by Asian Boxing Federation many times. She surely has experience and is familiar with boxing society.
- About allowance that sportsmen and coaches have not received, he accepted that was true. However, he have not withdrawn total amount of money from Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) yet but he gradually paid for coaches and sportsmen. In calculation, the debt is not very much.
Due to this, Mr.Santipab asked 9 sportsmen and coaches, who complained the association, to take remaining compensation at the association’s office at national stadium within 15 June. Mr.Sakon Wannaphong, the director of sport development department of SAT, will be a witness. He confirmed that he owed sportsmen and coaches for about two hundred thousand Baht. However, there is no need to hand in front of mass media because he has been judged too much already.

MOTS logo
Official reactions to counter measure the damage done to Thailand’s main source of revenue have appeared. It looks it is getting officially addressed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS). As a natural consequence of the violence and basic hampering of basic functions of Bangkok tourism took a distinct down turn. Prime Minister Abhist Viasat has assured all visitors that normalcy has returned to Thailand and he’s at least rhetorically assured everyone Thailand is on the path to reconciliation towards all factions of the conflict with the red shirts.
But beyond those obvious statements MOTS has issued the following statement on their own site:
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports places the safety and security of international tourists above all else. Free travel insurance for foreign tourists and a waiver of tourist visa fees have been extended to 31 March 2011. The Royal Thai Government has issued insurance measures to protect foreigners visiting Thailand who areinjured or unable to travel out of Thailand due to rioting. This programme is intended to boost the confidence of foreigners visiting Thailand.
As part of a coordinating effort to help inject some money again into Bangkok’s Muay Thai tourism and training camp industry Nirot Sunthornlekha, the president of Commission of Tourism and Sports, House of Representatives (MOTS) revealed that MOTS was preparing to advance the concept of the Muay Thai visa. All related parties of the Thai Ministry of Finance and tourism are expected to attend.
In essence the proposed Muaythai VISA will offer an opportunity for foreigners who want to study Muay Thai in Thailand a longer initial stay to do so. The Muay Thai visa will expand on the typical duration of 3 months to 6 months to a year. So prospective students now have a minimum of twice the time to devote to Muay Thai training on a visa while in Thailand. Muaythai camps, which have been registered legally with Sports Authority of Thailand or educational institutes containing Muaythai curriculum, such as Banbueng Rajabhat University and Bangkok Thonburi University, will approve this.
Good thinking on the Thai government’s part I think. And I have a pretty good feeling this will shortly coalesce into a reality.

In March 2009, SportAccord signed an agreement with the city of Beijing, P. R. China, to organize the first SportAccord Combat Games. Scheduled from 28 August to 4 September 2010, the competition will showcase 13 Martial Arts and Combat sports, both Olympic and non-Olympic. The event will also include a Cultural Program that will reflect the social and cultural values of these sports and Combat Games as a whole.
Sport Accord has announced that each sport will have 80 top athletes competing in the 2010 SportAccord Combat Games. These athletes will go through the qualification system set up by their respective International Federation. It is expected that the world best martial arts and combat sports athletes will qualify for the Combat Games. Both male and female athletes will take part. For those sports requiring weigh-in, different weight categories will be included.
During the eight days of competition, the 2010 SportAccord Combat Games will also include a cultural program. Indeed, martial arts and combat sports have rich cultural heritages and convey social and educational values. The Combat Games will then serve as a great opportunity to enable deeper understanding of the sports by the public.
This year’s SportAccord Combat Games of 2010 will be held in Beijing, China. Best of luck to all athletes representing their home countries. The event will last from August 27th, 2010 to September 4th, 2010. The last of the national qualifiers for participating nations wraps for Asia during the week of June 25th to June 30th, 2010.

Sangtiennoi the Deadly Kisser
Got this piece of news from Bryan Popejoy, Muay Thai trainer and in my biased opinion probably one of the nicest people one could ever care to meet in USA Muay Thai.
Muay Thai Legend Sangtiennoi makes his first ever U.S. Seminar Appearance at Boxing Works, Hermosa Beach, CA. Sangtiennoi is the head trainer at the world famous Baan Muay Thai Gym in Bangkok, Thailand. He is a former Champion at both Rajadamnern and Lumpini Stadiums, the premier venues for Muay Thai. In addition to his own fighting prowess, he has taught and trained numerous champions in Muay Thai, K-1, Kickboxing and MMA. Sangtiennoi has fought and beaten a virtual who’s who of Muay Thai greats but is probably famous most in the west for his win against Ramon Dekkers at the ripe old age of 17.

Space is Limited. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to train with one of the legends of Muay Thai.
Bryan himself has given some information captured via youtube and has what I’d regard as a very comprehensive knowledge in Muay Thai from his years of fighting and training Muay Thai. Here’s a sample of Bryan demoing some of that knowledge.

Ultimate Thai 5 Lineup
Unfortunately it looks like the live stream pay-per-view couldn’t happen due to some issues with the HD encoding equipment. Better experience still than the disastrous Champion of Champions 2 experience that left fans holding the bag and out their money entirely.
But the results are as follows (winners in bold):
Sofiane Derdega wins over Herbert Womaleu
Raouf Ibrahim wins over Belious Chiahou
Olivier Tchetche wins over Thomas Adamand
Boubacar Konte wins over Mamadou Diabira
Thiraphong Saengdaeng wins over Yacine Mahillon via KO the in 2nd round
Bovy Sor Udomson wins over Moussa Konate by points. Apparently Bovy adjusted his style to a very technical and tactically smart style rather than the brawling style that made Bovy a highlight reel favorite.
Gregory Choplin wins over Jonathan Camara:
A very close match but Choplin blocked enough attacks and was able to outpoint Camara.
Pascal LaFleur won over Steve Adams of England in a reportedly close fight. Sadly this was Pascal’s retirement bout.
Kaoklai Kaennorsing wins over Aurelien Duarte by first round TKO.
