Steven Wakeling

The Champions Club (TCC) will host its sixth event on Sat January 8th, as England’s Steve Wakeling meets WBC Muay Thai super middleweight champion Jaochalam Chatkranokgym at Tipp Plaza in downtown Pattaya. Wakeling first came to international attention and acclaim in 2005 defeat of John Wayne Parr for the WBC Muay Thai middleweight world championship. Wakeling then subsequently fought and defeated Jomhod Kiatadisak. Wakeling then lost to Lamsongkram Chuwattana in 2007. Wakeling after winning a World Muay Thai Council (WMC) Muay Thai Against Drugs  in 2008 in Rajadamnern stadium went into a hiatus of fighting.

Interestingly, Khun Ithipon Khunploum, Mayor of Pattaya and TCC promoter Bernard Caplin launched The Champions Club Thailand, at a special guest reception at the Pattaya Hilton on Tuesday. Over 50 distinguished guests from all over Thailand, including media, sponsors, partners and Mr. Niels Colov, CEO of the Pattaya People Media Group, attended the official TCC 6 reception.

The Champions' Club

TCC promoter Bernard Caplin said:

“I am very proud to confirm an extensive cross media cooperation with our choice partner in Pattaya, the Pattaya People Media Group.” We are also very pleased to confirm that TCC 6, The Champions Club Thailand 2011, will take place “open-air” on January 8th on the grounds of the Tipp Plaza complex.

“An event of this scale would also not be possible without the support from our major new partners, Thai Yamaha, Thai Namthip, Nok Air, Pattaya People Media Group and TopKingBoxing.

“Today marks a very special day for us indeed” Bernard said to invited guests. ” I am proud to say that TCC 6 is a milestone event, as it now establishes The Champions Club in the homeland of Muaythai as a mainstream sports event, that can help contribute to general sports event developement in the fantastic city of Pattaya.”

Also thank you to the WBC Muaythai for sanctioning the main event, the Supermiddleweight Championship of the World between Steve Wakeling and Jaochalam. Good luck to you both.”

Jaochalam, who has been the WBC super middleweight champion since October 2009, defeated France’s Yohan Lidon – the originally scheduled opponent for Giorgio Petrosyan at Thai Boxe Mania – on points at the King’s Cup Challenge in Bangkok on December 5th.

King of the Ring with Kaoponlek

Somsak Kaoponlek the former Lumpini stadium champion and Contender Asia Qualifier for the now cancelled Contender Asia Season 2 returns.  More recently Kaoponlek is noted for his fights with notable France Thaiboxing talent Fabio Pinca, who won this year’s Thai Fight tournament held recently. Kaoponlek won their first encounter in 2007 by decision.  Ironically the two are also scheduled to meet this month at Thai Boxe Mania 2011. This time Kaoponlek will face off against Elias Aharram of France.

Elias Aharram recently won in a WKN Belgium fight by a 2nd  round KO. Aharram fights out of Team Domingos in France.

The earlier announced bout with  Malik Mangouchi against Steve Valente has been cancelled. Malik withdrew for health reasons. This fight will be replaced by:
Karim Souda VS Mike Schmidt at 72.5 kg. Also an additional fight has been added with Kevin Goubernator (Hennion-gym) vs. Delf (Strasbourgteam).

The rest of the card is so far scheduled to be:

Frederic Sinistra Vs. Zinedine Mameur Lain

Kaoponlek (now residing in Italy) Vs. Elias Arraham

Cyril Jacques vs. Jesse Petit-Jean

More fights are still being made for the February 12th card. The action begins at Espace Chadeau in Ludres, France. Tickets presumably will go on sale this month for the event.

Coke Chunhawat Returns to Action

Thanks goes to Lynda Chunhawat for the information. A new fight has been added to the inaugural event of Lion Fight Promotions: Coke Chunhawat the WMC international champion will return to action versus USA standout Scotty Leffler. Coke recently gave his opinion on fighting American opponents and international opponents including Kevin Ross who will also be fighting on this very card. The event will be held February 12, 2011 at the Star of the Desert Arena, Primm, Nevada.

Kevin Ross will be fighting a very seasoned Thai opponent in Loh-Ngern Pitakkruchaiden. Loh-Ngern has fought the likes of Jomthong Chuwattana and many other top tier Muay Thai talent from the capital nation of Muay Thai.

Ross has recently busied himself internationally by training at Sitsongpeenong in Bangkok and fighting in the Isuzu Muay Thai marathon where he put on an impressive showing. Ross also recently fought Malaipet and defeated him in a very dominant fight promoted by Stand Up Promotions.

Saenchai Versus Harrison 2 Is Official

Liam Harrison Celebrates

A time and date has been named for UK Muay Thai standout Liam Harrison to rematch the widely regarded pound for pound best in the world in Muay Thai: Saenchai Sinbi. Dan Green’s Fight Sport Industries brings the rematch: Harrison vs Saenchai 2 – Saturday 9th April 2011 at Doncaster Dome in the United Kingdom.

Dan’s shows get successively bigger in scope and matchups and in my opinon could now be safely considered the biggest promoter in the UK for Muay Thai. It’ll be interesting to see how his shows grow and where he takes his product to next.  In the past Fight Sport Industries has brought 8-man full rules Muay Thai tournaments or shows with main eventers known internationally such as Buakaw Por Pramuk.

Saenchai Sinbi Muay Thai

The first time the two fought Saenchcai would defeat Harrison by points in an exciting fight.  Saenchai said he of Harrison that it was a great fight because Harrison would duplicate the techniques he used on Harrison. In the February 2009 bout Saenchai even found himself swept by the very game Harrison.

Tickets will go on sale mid-January, 2011. There are a number of other fights being finalized to fill out the card but early on it looks like an exciting rematch is in the works. In past events with Fight Sport Industries I have expectations that the rest of the card will be worthy of attention as well.

Steve McKinnon Versus Carnage Corbett Rematch Stalled

By Mike LNg

Steve McKinnon

During the past few weeks, the McKinnon camp have apparently been trying to arrange a meeting with the Nathan “Carnage”Corbett camp to negotiate the rematch fight. In the first fight Nathan Corbett won by a 4th round TKO due to elbow cut. Corbett has since moved on to the heavyweight division and making his mark there as well.  In that time Corbett has won the following accolades:

  • 2010 W.K.N. Muay Thai World Champion -95kg
  • 2010 A-1 World Combat Cup Heavyweight Tournament Champion
  • 2009 W.I.P.U. King of the Ring Champion

Steve McKinnon is coming off a title defense against Brazil’s Eduardo Morais and against France’s Stephane Superregui for the WBC Muay Thai super cruiserweight title.

Reportedly, both were ready to fight but Corbett’s camp declined the fight. The reasoning is that Corbett’s fight calendar is full for 2011 and likely 2012.  It’s unlikely that WBC can make a match up at that weight given that Corbett holds no titles at McKinnon’s current weight. It seems the matches future if there is to be one would be up to promotional pressure and fan demand in Australia.
