Le Banner Vs. Novack

Much thanks goes to Thomas ‘Larsenator’ Larson for sending me the videos and also for youtube channel Skel97441 for uploading the videos to begin with.  This weekend the headline event at the Reunion, France card was the World Professional Muay thai Federation (WPMF) heavyweight world championship bout between K-1 star Jerome Le Banner and Tomas Novack. I was impressed actually with how well Novack did in this entire fight. He did not seem as intimidated by Le Banner as I had expected he may be. Without more delay enjoy the fight and draw your own conclusions based on the video.

Muay Thai Fighter Survey

Survey Says 'Ouch'

Stephen Strotmeyer, head instructor at Pittsburgh Muay Thai is conducting a research study about injuries from participation in sanctioned Muay Thai matches. The results are apparently going to be used towards a doctoral dissertation with Dr.Thomas Songer. The survey is 100% anonymous so it does not require anyone to disclose their name.

Stephen Strotmeyer has also been involved in efforts with the Association of Boxing Commissions to unify rules in United States Muay Thai.

The data will be presumably published at later date by the University of Pittsburgh and will have a compilation of information in regards to injuries incurred during fights.

This looks very interesting and overall a good thing to do to capture this sort of information. Interested in participating?  Click here to begin.

If you have any questions about the study, please contact Stephen Strotmeyer, 121 University Place, University Center for Social & Urban Research, 412-624-3857 or email sjsst43@pitt.edu or Thomas Songer, PhDtjs+@pitt.edu . If you have any concerns about your rights in this study, please contact the Human Subjects Protection Advocate at 1-888-212-2668.

Weigh-Ins for LeBanner Versus Novack Complete

LeBanner and Novack Face-Off After Weigh-Ins

Weigh-ins for Jerome Le Banner and Thomas Novack are complete. The two are now scheduled to fight for the World Professional Muay Thai Federation (WPMF) heavy weight title tonight. LeBanner has lately been busy in international boxing bouts with virtually no K-1 activity lately. The fight will happen at the Isle of Reunion, France. It looks like the WPMF is making serious attempts to be a more recognized international independent Muay Thai sanction and have maintained a busy schedule lately to make that happen with many high profile events.

LeBanner weighed in at a very muscular 120 kg while Novack weighed in at 91kg. LeBanner was quoted as saying “You want Blood and Sweat? You’ll sweat blood.” For his part Novack appeared calm and even grinned nonchalantly.

LeBanner also commented that Thomas Novack made no eye contact with him.  The bout will be broadcast on live on Orange Sport in France beginning at 9:25 p.m. Commentary will be provided by Desson Thomas Diafat and Dida Diafat.

Anuwat Kaewsamrit Retains WPMF World Title

Anuwat Lands one of the Iron Hands of Siam

A little bit late with this piece of news. But the Muay Thai Open 12 held In Tokyo, Japan has concluded on July 11th, 2010 and the results are in.  The event was sanctioned by New Japan Kickboxing Federation and the World Professional Muay Thai Federation (WPMF) from Thailand. Basically the event was configured as a Thailand versus Japan card.

Anuwat Kaewsamrit successfully defended his World Professional Muay Thai Federation featherweight championship title. The fighter famously known as the Iron Hands of Siam took it to Shin Saenchai of the Saenchai Gym in Japan. Just judging from the photos it was a rough time for 3rd rank challenger of WPMF, Shin.  And as you can tell there was indeed some amount of blood letting. Anuwat would end the contest by a 5th round knockout on what looked like a very game challenger in Shin.

Muay Thai Open 12 Lineup

In one of the semi main events Boo Sasiprapa (former Rajadamnern stadium champion) would fight Shinichiro Ono.  Boo would take the fight by unanimous decision.

Densiam Lookprabath (Former Lumpinee stadium Champion) fought Jo Utsunomiya.  Ultimately Lookbrath would stop Ustunomiya by an elbow cut stoppage in the 4th round.

Its good to see Japan is still doing Muay Thai events of such a high caliber. Too often I think Japan is associated with only K-1 and little else.  It’s good to see Muay Thai is still very alive and active and it will be interesting to see what sort of Muay Thai showcases NJKF will do next.

Mwande Vapi Crossing Continents to Fight

•July 22, 2010 • 2 Comments

By Mike LNg

Mawande Vapi with South Africa Championship belt

Mawande Vapi is a former champion in Muay Thai for South Africa. Mawande in a very short time in Thaiboxing complied a record of 24 wins with only 2 losses and no draws. Mawande quickly became known for his explosive power and strength and would even take his opponents to the limit in his experiences in MMA. Mwande will be making his first appearance in the United States versus Shawn Yarbough with the winner claiming the IKKC international light heavy weight title at the WCK Muay Thai event on August 28th, 2010. Shawn is the current holder of the IKKC light heavy weight title. And now to the interview, per usual answers are in bold with questions in normal text.

We briefly discussed your career in Muay Thai in South Africa. What made you decide to pursue Muay Thai as a chosen sport?

At a young age I used to watch movies like the Kickboxer (by Jean Claude Van Damme), Enter the Dragon (by Bruce Lee) therefore my love for martial arts developed from there.Since I have done boxing and karate and in both sports I was good, I decided that I could both combine the two and do kickboxing. At the time I was doing kick-boxing I developed the love for Muay Thai, so I thought this sport is tougher and better than kick boxing. So thats how all it started.

How old were you when you began Muay Thai?

I was in my early 20’s, so at the time I was 22, about 5 years ago.

You also mentioned your coach is an acquaintance of Steve Kalakoda, father and coach of K-1 fighter Virgil Kalkoda. Is there a similarity in coaching styles?

Not at all, our style is totally different. We have a different approach and concepts in this fight game.

How is the Muay Thai scene in South Africa overall?

In South Africa right now the Muay Thai scene is not doing well in some provinces because of MMA introduction but it is gradually taking off in other provinces.

Having had some bigger names come out of South Africa like Mike Bernardo, Andrew Thompson and Virgil Kalakoda do you feel you have a legacy to live up to having come from there?

Yes, I believe so. Because I’ve trained with the likes of Andrew Thompson. He lives in the same town with me in South Africa,East London. At times I would go and train with him at his gym.

Some observers and fans of international Muay Thai have said that Africa may be the undiscovered continent in terms of Muay Thai. Chris Ngimbi of Congo recently has been making impressive progress in its Show Time and many South Africans now train and fight in Thailand. Do you feel Muay Thai is growing in Africa overall?

Yes, I believe theres a lot of talent in Africa but due to the lack of sponsorships and finance. The sportsmen end up losing their interest to the sport.

In your upcoming fight in California the bout will be under full rules Muay Thai how comfortable are you with elbows?

Well in this fight-game I’m comfortable with anything.

Mawande Vapi in the Cage

Some people may not know that in addition to your Muay Thai experience you also have some MMA experience what made you decide to return to Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is where my heart is. I just love the whole package that Muay Thai carries.

Where are you currently training at and what brought you to the United States?

I’m currently training at Miami, Florida now under the supervision of Danny “Hawk” Normandy at Normandy Gym. I came here to gain experience and to prepare for this coming fight.

It seems you are a largely unknown fighter in the USA. What can Americans expect to see in your fight?

An explosive undiscovered talent, a fighter who brings flair to the sport of Muay Thai.

This will be your first fight in America. What have you heard about American fighters?

Yes, its my first fight in America, I heard that Americans have mastered the technique of the sport. They have superb skills and techniques in Muay Thai.

Did you train in other martial arts before Muay Thai?

Not really, I did a bit of karate and boxing.

What qualities do you think go into being a top fighter?

Determination, focus and hard work. That’s what makes a top fighter.

It seems more and more international Thaiboxers are now travelling to Thailand to refine their skills. Would you one day like to train there?

Yes of course, that would be a dream come true. I would love to visit Thailand to refine my skills and top-up my Muay Thai game.

What do you know of your opponent Shawn Yarborough?

I dont know much about him and that to me is not a problem. I have fought fighters in the past that I didnt know anything about. I think what’s important is that a fighter must know himself very well and the capabilities he carries with him. The fighter must know himself very well and be confident of handling anything that comes his way.

Do you have a favorite technique in Muay Thai?

I really can’t say I do because every technique works for me.

What do you consider your biggest achievement in Muay Thai so far?

Fighting in the United States is my biggest step I have achieved so far.

Who so far has been your most difficult opponent in Muay Thai?

Leon Maynhard in South Africa. That guy is one of the fighers that is determined and doesnt give up. In occasions that I fought him I was in bad shape but he shows determination every time he fights.

Who are some of your heroes in Muay Thai?

I have local heroes, the guys who have made it into the international circuit: Andrew Thomson,Mike Bernardo and Virgil Kalakoda.

After seeing some of your training I was impressed with how remarkably light on your feet you are at 175lbs. What do you train specifically to maintain it?

I run a lot, lots of roadwork. I also like working my cardio with lots of physical bodyweight excersises done rapidly with a faster pace.

For new fans of yours and for Americans less familiar with you what would you like them most to know about Mawande Vapi?

I’m a gentleman, a down to earth person, and a person that is easy to socialize with. I like to meet people and make new friends. I’m easy going and try to help others in some ways if I can.

The official rules for the contest will be 3 times 3 minute rounds with a 2 minute interval rest between rounds, with full Thai rules. It will be contested at Indoor Stadium Hua Mark that has a  15,000 seat capacity. The press conference itself reportedly had an attendance of 2000 fans and press.

Kombat League to Feature Intercontinental Title Fight

•July 21, 2010 • Leave a Comment

By Mike LNg

Kombat League has maintained a very busy schedule of events and the next one coming promises to be interesting. From promoter Boer Gianbattista comes the event Iron Fighters to Pordenone Fiere in Italy. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Kombat League it’s a fairly ambitious undertaking that covers Muay Thai both for professionals and amateurs. Their overall mission  states basically that they want to provide a forum for professionals to fight and develop a career from.  Though with last year’s KL Cup event amateurs were focused on. So from that perspective I salute Kombat League. Anyhow without much more diversion let’s look at the card as I know it right now.

Iron Fighter poster

The main event for this card should prove very competitive with the 2 principals involved. Thai transplant Kaoponlek Somsak will be the home team fighter for Italy. Kaoponlek has complied a well over 280 fight record but has resided in Italy in recent times. As a former Lumpinee Stadium Champion and in recent times the  Contender Asia Qualifier champion for Italy, Kaoponlek’s resume is deep in both quantity and quality.

On the opposing end is Charles Francois of France. Among Charles Francois’ accomplishments he took the France A Class championship for Muay Thai two times. Francois is no stranger to fighting high level competition and recently outpointed Kraenkai Tor Silichai and beat Khun Khemer fighter Bird Kam at last year’s Queen’s Birthday held in Thailand.  Both will be meeting in the ring to decide the Intercontinental Title holder in Kombat League under full Muay Thai rules.

The undercard for the event is still being pieced together by the promoter but I will follow up with details as they become available.

For more information go to the offical Kombat League page.

Could be interesting to see by luck of the draw if we could see a Kieran Keddle and Imrhan Khan rematch.  Khan was last seen internationally competing in the 8-man Toyota Cup event held in Thailand. That’s quite a christening for Fight Sport Industries’ first event.  When the draw’s announced it could be  intriguing  to see who even makes it to the semi-finals.

Thai Fight logo

Thai Fight the television event by Thai TV Channel 3 has completed their press conference preparation. Bobo Sharos, Nak Muay from Italy who is participating in the show gave me some details. The filming of the show with the fighters at their requisite camps is already in progress.  Tomorrow live on Channel 3 at 10:00 am the fight draws will be done to see which fighter faces which other fighter.

Bobo also shared with me some of the nice prizes being staked. One of which is a new Isuzu DMax.

Thai Fight Press Conference readies

Apparently, Bob Sharos is spending time at Sitsongpeenong, home to Kem and Sittichai Sitsongpeenong honing his Muay Thai for the long road of fights he has ahead in Thai Fight.  Thai Fight is expected to have a total of 16 competitors from different countries including the USA’s Kevin Ross, France’s Fabio Pinca, the UK’s Liam Harrison and other very high level international nak muay. Look’s like the press push has begun in earnest for the event and I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
