Some big names are expected to be on board to promote the inaugural Combat Sports Games of Sport Accord. Muhammad Ali, the three-time world heavyweight-boxing champion, together with Jackie Chan and Jet Li, will be the faces promoting the first Sportaccord Combat Games 2010, Beijing Evening News reported on Monday.

Sportaccord Combat Games is a new type of comprehensive athletic contest, launched by World Sports Federation and to be held every four years in what I would assume to be a mirror of the old format of the Olympic games.  Sport Accord is the successor to the The General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF). The original GAISF was founded in 1967 and groups together the International Sports Federations and various associations with the aim of defending world-wide sport, becoming better informed and making themselves known, and cooperating and coordinating their activities. International Federation of  Muay Thai Amateur is known for their allying with GAISF in hopes of making Muay Thai an Olympic Sport.

The 2010 game will be held in Beijing from Aug 28 to Sept 4. Competition events include wushu, aikido, boxing, judo, ju-jitsu, karate, kendo, kickboxing, muay thai boxing, sambo, sumo, taekwondo and wrestling.

“Athletes applying for the competition all rank in the top 20 for their respective fight styles,” said Li Jinkang, deputy director of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sport.

At present, 1,904 athletes from 105 countries and regions have already confirmed they will attend. Countries including Russia and Ukraine, which have an established fondness for Sportaccord forms of combat, plan to send large numbers of athletes to the event.

About 800 volunteers will provide assistance at Sportaccord Combat Games 2010. The battles will be held in four gymnasiums across the city, all built for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

“The first Sportaccord Combat Games will expand Beijing’s international influence,” said Jiang Xiaoyu, chairman of the organizing committee of the game.

Here’s a video that provides an overview of this year’s Combat Games schedule and organization.

Also Jill Guido will be participating this year as the only United States woman to be represented in her weight class for Muay Thai.

Suk Por Pramuk At Wu Lin Feng

Buakaw

Huge thanks to Anthony Casterjon (pretty great fighter too) for pointing me in the right direction and finding the media for Suk Por Pramuk in China!  With his direction I was able to find the entire broadcasted Wu Lin Feng from July featuring Por Pramuk gym versus Sanda fighters. I owe you one Anthony and you rule for dropping the source videos on me.

Buakaw Smiles for China Press

Buakaw Por Prmauk And Saenchai Sor Kingstar would also be guest teachers for a seminar hosted at Henan sponsored by Twins and Raja equipment manufacturers prior to the Wu Lin Feng event.  I can’t accurately tell you how much of a star Buakaw is in China but it’s by a margin bigger than anything that could be compared to in the west.

Saenchai Sor Kingstar

A few weird things about this event some times the Chinese fighters had elbow pads on some times they didn’t. Also I couldn’t find the Saenchai bout which he lost to the Sanda fighter.  Apparently for whatever reason it wasn’t broadcast. So with out too much further ado let’s move on the event. Fights are posted in the order of the broadcast card.

Toyota Cup line Up

If  one can say anything about this tournament its that Saenchai is very consistent in this year’s Toyota Cup.  Saenchai had 3 different opponents and finished each by TKO/KO.

This brief rundown of the Toyota Cup is courtesy of Rob Cox’s point of view.

Quarter Final 1

Sanchai vs. Imran Khan

Tough draw for Imran… he’s talented as hell, and I would love to see this fight.  Apparently Imran was down for an 8 count in the 2nd round via a Sanchai elbow.  Then quickly downed again by a punch.  Referee stoppage  just short of the end of the 2nd round

Quarter Final 2

Valdet Gashi vs. Issei IngramGym (W- Points)

Quarter Final 3

Masoud Izadi (W- Points)  Vs. Arturo Lin Can

Quarter Final 4

Kevin Ross (W-Points) vs. Masoud

Semi Final 1

Sanchai (Referee Stoppage) vs Issei Ingramgym

Semi Final 2 Masoud (W-Points) vs. Kevin Ross. Its been reported by all who saw the event so far that despite losing Kevin Ross put on a pretty big hurt on Masoud.

Final Sanchai KOs Masoud for the win of this year’s Toyota Cup.

Ponsaklek Wonjongkam

For the international boxing portion of the night Pongsaklek Wongkongkam made short work of his opponent, Rey Megrino of the Phillipines in exactly one round by way of knock out. The distance it took was 1minute and 37 seconds. Pretty exciting night and I’ll update as I get video of both the international boxing portion and the tournament portion.

Cosmo Alexandre Readies for MMA

Cosmo Alexandre

Just got this news via an interview Cosmo Alexandre just did with Tatame’s Portuguese language edition.

It’s a pretty good interview and Cosmo answers about his thoughts on now preparing for an MMA fight career as well as Brazil’s Muay Thai scene.

Cosmo looks for the submission

Here’s basically what I managed to glean from the excellent interview:

  • Cosmo will definitely continue fighting with Show Time
  • Cosmo still prefers Full Muay Thai rules to kickboxing or K-1
  • Cosmo is training diligently in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Diego Sebastian and Marcelo Nigue
  • He said he could become a dual sport combat athlete as his gym mates Melvin Manhoef is done.
  • K-1 is not something he interested due to the weight constraint of 70kg and Cosmo fights any where from 72kg to 77kg

Cosmo diligently training his ground game

For those of you who are new to Cosmo Alexandre.  Cosmo is fairly unique in being a true nak muay from Brazil.  Cosmo has fought and won the WPMF championship and is King’s Cup winner as well.  Cosmo spent a great deal of time cultivating his skill in Muay Thai in Thailand. Between Cosmo Alexandre and Leo Monteiro, the two have effectively put Brazil on the map as a nation to watch for developing new Muay Thai talent.

Overall it was a great interview and Cosmo Alexandre still comes across as gracious and honest as he did in our first interview. Ultimately he said he would like to get a champion strap at the UFC. Pretty big news and pretty good read.  It would be pretty crazy having a UFC competitor with bonafide set of Muay Thai skills and credibility.

Yamada Film Featuring Muay Thai Greats

Buakaw in movie garb

This story was shared with me via Phon Martee. It looks like some initial press coverage is emerging for the film Yamada – The Samurai of Ayothaya.

Yamada stars some  famous Muay Thai and Boxing superstars: Boxing Olympic Gold medalists – Somjit & Mahnut; Muay Thai Greats – Somluck, Saenchai, Annuwat, Yodsanklai & more.

“YAMADA NAGAMASA”, the young Samurai of Edo period, came to be a soldier in the Japanese volunteer regiment in Auothaya. He fought against a group of Japanese who disguised themselves as the Hongsawadee soldiers and beset Ayothaya with troubles led by “Kuroda Toranaga”. Yamada was critically injured and helped by a group of Thai warriors. They, later, vowed to be “bosom friends”.

Yamada was taken to the priest with a talisman and incantation who imparted the knowledge of Thai boxing and fencing to him. Later on, Yamada and his friends passed the fighting recruitment held to select the masterful combatants to be the Royal guards of King Naresuan the Great, the heroic king who declared the independence from Hongsawadee. Yamada and his friends fought bravely against the enemies, which could please the king very much. However, the never forgot to take revenge on Kuroda, who had defamed the Japanese. Finally, he could successfully kill Kuroda but in exchange for the life of his “friends”.

Being deeply grateful for the kindness of the Ayothaya king and the true friendship of the Siamese, the young Samurai was resolved that “This land was not my birthplace but where my soul would rest”.

It looks like the films of Tony Jaa have wedged an opening for Thai films specifically featuring Muay Thai for international audiences.  I am wondering how real nak muay’s moves will translate into movie Muay Thai. It looks like the producers have wisely opted to go with a cast featuring Thaiboxers with an international following.  With that nod of the head from the producers I almost feel obligated to go forth and support this film via at minimum a rental. View the trailer below.  I have to admit it did actually get me excited for this film.

Live Stream of Toyota Cup

Toyota Cup 2010 lineup

This news comes from Valdet Gashi’s official site.

This Friday, July 2, 2010 between 2:00 PM and 5:00  PM Thai time the Toyota Cup 8-man  broadcasts on Channel 7 live. For those of us in the western hemisphere it will be a 10 hours difference PDT and 12 hours difference EST.

In  Thailand the Toyota Marathon this year will be a one day event, eight-man tournament. Participation in this tournament will include fighters from eight countries. The Toyota Cup is one of the most famous Muay Thai tournaments in Thailand.

Saenchai Sor Kingstar, Valdet Gashi, Pongsanglek, Imran Khan and Kevin Ross among other international and Thai stars will be included on the card. Valdet notably just fought and recently defeated Jaraud Sit O  a former Omnoi stadium champion and a veteran of some 300 plus fights.  Valdet I have watched with some interest in his bouts in Malaysia’s Z-1 events.  Should be an overall well-matched event with a very international flavor. I will see if I can capture the event clips later on and of course post it on the Science of 8 Limbs.

Buakaw Versus Xu Yan Video

Buakaw Por Pramuk

Looks like some video footage has finally surfaced with Buakaw from Wu Lin Feng.  Xu Yan is 1-1 in K-1 MAX and Buakaw himself is no stranger to Sanda rules matches. A younger Buakaw dealt a devastating beatdown in the Sanda police versus Muay Thai event from 2002.

Here’s the complete fight with Buakaw Vs. Xu Yan.

Malaipet Returns to Action

Malaipet Returns

When I first got notified by this coming event via David Huey I was not certain what to think.  But apparently this event is really called WMC Full Rules Muay Thai.  It took me  a while to even process who was on the card with WMC and the promoter name  being so prominently displayed on the poster above and beyond even the fighters.  Name marketing apparently is becoming increasingly important to the WMC . The WMC Full Rules Muay Thai event will take place July 18th at Quiet Cannon in Montebello, California.

Malaipet will be returning to action after his April 3rd, 2010 close split decision loss to Christoph Provust.  Malaipet rose to international prominence by handily beating many big name opponents in Europe before settling into the USA and having perhaps his highest profile bout in the USA against Duane Ludwig for a world title bout under the independent sanction of ISKA.  Ludwig would win this bout and largely move on to mixed martial arts competition. Malaipet unlike many Thai ex-pats  moved to international competition after capturing the Rajadamnern Stadium championship at a relatively young age.

Michael Manaquil, former WBC Muay Thai welter weight champion is definitely going to be a test for Malaipet. Coming from World Team USA Manaquil has fought many high level opponents in Ra’Karma Young of Fairtex and Danny Steele. I have no doubts Manaquil will come to the fight certain on making a point and getting a win over Malaipet.

This fight will matter for both fighters.  After some losses and a brief diversion into MMA Malaipet needs to win this for the good of his career.  Manaquil who has been absent from fighting for some time needs this win for mostly the same reasons: to prove that he is still at the top or near the top of his game.

The event will be held at Quiet Canyon in Montebello, California and will range in cost for $20 (Closed circuit TV viewers) to $100 for a ringside seat. At the moment early ticket purchases can be made at qc2020.com. A bit early to say for the rest of the card but the main event is a pretty significant one and should hold some drama.  I can remember Manaquil versus Malaipet being discussed years ago but now it looks like fans will finally get a chance to see this contest.
