Matt Embree Replaces Sean Kearney Against Nathan Smandych
By Mike LNg
Journey Fight Series 8 organizers have announced that 2011 Journey Fight Series 140lbs 8-man Tournament Champion Matt Embree (Siam No.1, Toronto) will step in on a week’s notice to fight Nate Smandych this Saturday at the Century Casino. The Vancouver, B.C. fighter originally scheduled to fight Smandych was Sean Kearney who had to pull out due to an injury.
Matt Embree was last seen in action against “Lightning” Lerdsila Chumpairtour where he lost by points. Prior to that fight Embree fought and defeated Rami Ibrahim and Phanuwat “Coke” Chanuwat. Along the way Embree won both the WBC and WMC North American titles. Embree is one the elite fighters representing Siam No.1 Gym in Ontario. As always I am impressed with how tough Smandych is matched despite being a family member of Journey Fight Series’ founder, Trevor Smandych.
The tournament bouts will include a 4-man format that will include 160lbs contestants. Troy Sheridan arguably has the toughest draw against very experienced Shane “Shaolin” Campbell with a resume of fights exceeding 50 professional fights! Troy granted an interview which can be viewed here. Troy among the new blood of Canadian Muay Thai middle weights has been a fast rising fighter in the North American scene seeming to grow with each fight while maintaining an undefeated record and an impressive knockout ratio.
