Coke Chunhawat

I got some news from Coke Chunhawat’s Team after his stoppage victory over Parwez Ghulam. Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat is continuing to train hard and ready himself for a the 2nd leg of the Journey Fight tournament held by Calgary Canada’s Trevor Smandych. The 2nd part of the 8-man tournament will represent a rematch for Chunhawat as he faces off against former opponent Matt Embree of Siam Number 1 gym in Toronto, Canada. Embree is a very lanky fighter for his weight and was a very game and competitive opponent for Chunhawat in their first match against each other.

Team Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat has also added a gallery of the fight Chunhawat had against quarter final journey Fight opponent Parwez Ghulam.  Much thanks to all at Team Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat for sharing th gallery of photos.

Bangkok Fight Night 9 Announced

Bangkok Fight Night 9

Atlanta, Georgia’s Khunpon Dechkampu has announced completion of his coming card for Bangkok Fight Night 9 which features an even blend of MMA and Muay Thai bouts.  Khunpon has made his mark as a trainer by giving the former champion’s tutelage to standout fighters Chike Lindsay and Stephen Richards. Lindsay in the past has won IMTO Super Welterweight World Title and the WKA Super Welterweight North American Title but is probably best known for his competitive fight with WBC Muay Thai champion Kevin Ross. Ultimately Lindsay would lose the fight.

Richards fought and beat at the time WBC United States light heavyweight champion Shawn Yarborough despite breaking his arm in the course of the fight. The victory netted Richards a WCK win but not the WBC Muay Thai United States title.

Bangkok Fight Night 9 should be an interesting proving ground to see which emerging young talent Khunpon has to reveal to the United States. The card represents a fairly even blend of MMA rules bouts and Muay Thai rules bouts with essentially a main event bout in each style.  The card known thus far along with weights of the fighters is as follows:

MMA rules bouts:

Steve McCall vs. Amir Dadovic 170lbs.

Will Kuhn vs. Sasuke Zapata 170lbs.

Derek “Bolo” Cathorn vs. Billy Joe Waters 240 lbs.

Gui Curry vs. Rafael Gorge 155 lbs.

Christian Arguello vs. TBA 155 lbs.

Mike Graves vs. Ja Lowery 175 lbs.

Stephen Upchurch vs. Josh Glover 155lbs. This bout will be the main event of the evening.

Muay Thai bouts

Anthony Nieves vs. Danny Watts 175 lbs.

Eric Castro vs. Josh Downing 160 lbs.

Moe Travis vs. Tecia Torres 115 lbs. This bout will be a title match.

Robel Kebede vs. Jade Kamchanan 150 lbs.

Colleen Luima vs. Mary Matia 118 lbs.

A preview interview clip has been released focusing on Tecia Torres. For ticket information go to the official Bangkok Fight Night site.

Joe Schilling Poised for United States Title Challenge

Joe Schilling, WBC United States super middleweight interim champion

Joe Schilling recently fought for and won the WBC Muay Thai super middleweight United States title, the interim one.  To quote the official WBC Muay Thai blurb on the event: “It took just 2.13 minutes for the new USA Muaythai sensation Joe Schilling to capture the national Super Middleweight interim title against Chase Green by TKO. ”

Not for a lack of fighting and giving exciting stoppage victories Schilling has yet to be granted a shot at the WBC Muay Thai USA title, not the interim one. Recently, Joe Schilling has expressed his frustration at having to fight qualifier after qualifier while a title match with United States title holder Jared Lara seemed perpetually out of grasp.  He further expressed his frustration at being ranked behind at the time number one seeded United States Thaiboxer Eric Utsch.

Now WBC Muay Thai has announced that the bout should happen with 6 months or less and that Lara had not made any title defenses recently due to being injured.  Apparently, this information was verified to the satisfaction of WBC United States Ranking President John E. Baker PHD PE. However, it’s become public knowledge that Lara was training for the Respect in the Cage MMA event held March 12th, 2011. Lara did in fact fight and win this bout by first round knockout.  It would seem Lara was not only healthy enough to fight but was healthy enough to knockout his opponent while wearing a 5 ounce MMA competition glove.

It seems internationally Schilling for his part has kept very abreast of what is happening internationally and has already eyed Steven Wakeling the newly crowned WBC Muay Thai world champion.  Not long before Wakeling’s promoter Bernard Caplin speculated on what may lie in the future and has speculated on a lack of opponents at the super middleweight limit.  It looks like Schilling is willing and able to fill that space.

Time will tell if Schilling gets his chance at Wakeling or the United States title and as an indicator the article published by the WBC makes it no easier to predict with the recent drastic shift in WBC Muay Thai’s own international rankings.

Oktagon 2011 Results

Oktagon 2011

Oktagon 2011 has wrapped up and the results are in and hopefully the full event will be at some point replayed on http://www.livefightcode.tv/page/FullFights. The big name filled card was as exciting on paper as it was to view live via stream. Cosmo Alexandre Vs. Giorgio Petrosyan was close but Petrosyan did enough to win under modified Muay Thai rules but speculatively had this been a Muay Thai match the outcome could have been a different result.

The bout between K-1 MAX standout Yoshihiro Sato and Giorgio Petrosyan’s brother Armen was a closely matched fight.  Armen Petrosyan produces a narrow win on points and shows much of the good timing and precision that has become a defining style for both Petrosyan brothers.

The results are as follows:

Giorgio Petrosyan wins vs. Cosmo Alexandre on points

Armen Petrosyan wins vs. Yoshiro Sato points

Andrei Kulebins win vs Angelo Campoli in rd4 via Doctor Stoppage

In the Fight Code tournament at 71 kg

Dzhabar Azkerov win his bout with a KO in the first round.
Sudsakorn Klinmee and Bruno Franchi win on points.
Both are qualified for quarter finals with Abdallah Mabel and Armen Petrosyan.

Wakeling’s Options and Weights

Steven Wakeling

After a dominant win over Joachalam Chatkranokgym Steven Wakeling’s last promoter Bernard Caplin of The Champion’s Club (TCC) is apparently busily seeking out new fights for the newly crowned WBC Muay Thai super middleweight champion.  Despite being gone from Muay Thai competition for almost 3 years Wakeling was in fine form against Jaochalam and won his championship via stoppage against Jaochalam coming from knee strikes.

Bernard Caplin had some statements that were fairly bold about Wakeling’s prospective opponents:

“You know, after Steve´s huge win on TCC 6 in Pattaya, its not that easy to find opponents or put together an international show!”

“Steve was so dominating in his comeback fight that even after a 2 year break, he still performed at world level, sharp as ever, controlling a top Thai opponent fighting up in weight. I really think there are only a handful of Muaythai fighters on this planet that can handle Steve.”

“Of course, Contender Asia star Yodsanklai Fairtex comes first to mind, also Artem Levin, Brazilian star Cosmo Alexandre or Czech Number 1 and WFCA World Champion Jiri Zak. Then it thins out fast.”

“If Yodsanklai Fairtex is interested, London has many great venues, a big Muaythai audience and is my old hometown! What a fight to promote if The Champions Club comes to the UK! We will see how things develop over the next few months, but if these guys are up for it, they just have to call me to start talking.”

“Artem Levin has just beaten Kaoklai for the WBC Muaythai Light Heavyweight belt, also another great option if Steve steps up in weight yet again. Wakeling vs Levin in Pattaya next January… now thats a fight!

Jiri Zak in the Czech capital, Prague, another great fight for the fans, again for Steve an interesting option if he steps upweight again. But at Supermiddleweight I don’t really see any big fights out there right now, maybe Eugene Ekelboom from Australia, or Shakuta if he can fight super middleweight. But thats about it.”

The Yodsanklai speculation is especially interesting since Yodsanklai in his last outing at the King’s Cup Tournament 2010 in Thailand and against Artem Levin in the International Federation Muay Thai Amateur final looked soft compared to his usual fighting condition. In the King’s Cup Tournament its even been reported that Yodsanklai needed additional time to cut 3 kg in excess weight. Yodsanklai could conceivably meet Wakeling in a fight as big as 75 kg. It does seem that Caplin at least seems determined to steer Steven Wakeling into the light heavyweight limits instead of remain fighting at super middleweight. Only time will tell but it would certainly be a significant notch on Wakeling’s already impressive resume with a potential 3rd championship to be earned in a 3rd weight class.

Phetsanguan Sitniwath Vs. Samranchai 96Peenung

Samranchai96

Phetsanguan Sitniwath Vs. Samranchai 96Peenung at the February 26th, 2011 Siam Omnoi stadium fights.  Omnoi Stadium has played the host to some of the larger weight classes in Muay Thai in Thailand with 144lbs and up.  Not coincidentally, the heavier Thai talent are the most recognizable names internationally where their weights are easier to match than some of the lighter Thai fighting talent. Recently, Omnoi has been the stage for the Thailand eliminations for Thai Fight.

Smarnachai is perhaps best known for his appearance on Dutch Promotion Slamm: Thailand versus Netherlands where he defeated Ray Staring by decision.

Duel at the Dome: Saenchai Vs. Harrison 2

Harrison Vs. Saenchai 2

Fight Sport Industries and Dan Green return and affirm what is becoming common with the United Kingdom’s biggest promoter by bringing an equally big card. As hyped many times prior Saenchai Sinbi Muay Thai will return in a 2nd match between he and UK standout Liam Harrison. Saencahi has in the past commented on how he enjoyed his first fight with Liam Harrison because Harrison would use the same technique that Saenchai would use on him.

Both have been very busy with Harrison competing in Thailand in the very well received Thai Fight super tournament where he fought and defeated Japan’s Soishiro Miyakoshi but was disqualified for not making the required weight limit.  Notably Harrison still defeated Soishiro by knockout. For his part Saenchai has been busy in Thailand fighting again and defeating Nong-O though the fight was notably closer with some critics viewing the fight in favor of Nong-O. Despite being injured Saenchai has acknowledged that he is healing quickly and should be fit for competition against Harrison.

Matchups are still in the works but the lineup known so far is as follows:

Liam Harrison (England) vs Sanchai Sor Sinbi (Thailand)

Damien Trainor (England) vs Rungravee Sasiprapa (Thailand)

Kevin Harper (Majestic Gym) vs Wayne McKoy (Nottingham)

Leigh Edlin (Chao Praya Lincoln) vs Kris Addis (Kao Loi)

Plus Joe Mcgovan, Chris Knowles, Michael Dicks, Andy Thrasher, Chad Sugden and others

Call 01302 370777 for tickets, reportedly the show is selling out fast.
