Journey Fight

The Journey Fight Series 140lb 8-man tournament completed last night at The Century Casino in Calgary, Canada. The Journey Fight series is the work of new promoter Trevor Smandych.  By all appearances the event lived up to its expectations and is well on its way to becoming an event people will continue to talk about. Especially with 2 more parts forth coming in this ambitious tournament.

The advancing fighters to the second leg of the tournament were an even mix of Canadian and American talent.

Siam Number One’s Matt Embree of Toronto, Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat of Oakland, Josh Palmer of Halifax, and Pennsylvania’s  Justin Greskiewitz made it into the 2nd stage of Journey Fight.

The results are as follows:

Josh Palmer wins vs. Mark DeLuca

Justin Greskiewicz wins vs. Nate Smandych

Matt Embree wins vs. Rami Ibrahim

Coke Chunhawat wins via stoppage vs. Parwez Ghulam in 3rd round.

The second round of the tournament on June 11th, 2011 could be interesting as Coke Chunhawat will be matched against previous opponent Matt Embree.  Justin Greskiewitz will in turn fight John Palmer. Speculatively, Coke will likely want to assert his will and continue on something of a stoppage streak that he has been on lately having now stopped 2 opponents in a row.  The first opponent being Battle of the Desert opponent Scotty Leffler.

I cannot help but continue to be impressed with the ambitiousness of this promotion and how Trevor seems to have a inherently good sense of good matchups and how a meaningful card like this helps Muay Thai as a whole on this continent.

MTTA National Championships

By all accounts Muay Thai Association of America’s (MTAA) National Championships brought the fireworks with a card that could have been named Texas versus California. In this instance it proved to be California that came ahead at the end of the card.  Joe Schilling wins the WBC Muay Thai National interim super middle weight championship and presumably becomes the first logical challenger for the WBC Muay Thai super middleweight national titlist, Jared Lara.

Artem “The Russian Experiment” Sharoshkin prevails over Saeksan Janjira student Boorzoo Honargohar by unanimous decision. This makes another win in the young professional fighter’s continuing career and another valuable addition in his win column.

MTAA’s National Championships card’s results are as follows.

Joe Schilling defeats Chase Green via KO  in Round 1.

Artem Sharoshkin defeats Boorzoo Honargohar via unanimous decision

Jose Palacios defeats Joey Pagliuuso via KO at 2:45 into Round 5

Ron Scolesdang defeats Beto Rodriguez via unanimous Decision

Oscar Sanchez defeats Kha Tran via unanimous decision.

Charles Bisset defeats Jason Rzepka via unanimous decision

Tigran Martirosyan defeats Marcos Guevera

Alfred Kashakyan defeats Gaston Bolanos by stoppage in the 1st round.

Here is Joe Schilling’s bout with Chase Green in its entirety. Much thanks goes to Vizier19 for the upload of the video.

IFS and the Tale of the Delay Paid Writer

IFS

Opinion time and commentary is something I actually make effort to avoid. In Muay Thai the truth is in the ring.  I would prefer to let the actions in the ring speak for itself where possible and feasible.  But I often find myself compelled by own conscience and unwillingness to let wrong occur and never comment on it.  By the same token when good in the sport happens I feel compelled to let it be known that any organization or person’s good efforts deserve recognition. I find myself having to remind myself, yes there are still good people in the sport of Muay Thai and I struggle more often than I should at separating basically alphabet soup sanctions eager to assess fees and trinkets and little else from what Muay Thai is as a sport.

Despite the actual decisions or even on paper outcomes the ring dispels falsehood and illuminates reality with the simple truth of what happens in the time frame between two fighters in the ring. It’s a truth that is as transcendent as it is basic and elegant in its simplicity. Building on this fights are what makes promotions valid or invalid.  So what happens when truth is found inadequate in building the excitement a meaningful card can bring?  You market and market heavily. Be warned what follows is my biased opinion on a recent happening in advance of the International Fight Showdown (IFS) card.

In no previous post I have ever had have I ever mentioned positively or negatively commented on any event the IFS has ever done.  Simply put, I believe in truth in advertising.  There is no truth to an international fights showdown that includes primarily amateurs and features almost exclusively California talent. Hence, its not worth comment on and in truth much needed experience is afforded to young fighters coming up or just wanting to test the waters competitively. After all what’s the use in telling a short person they are short? It won’t make them grow taller. Any meaningful change in terms of purpose has to be willful. The truth in advertising in these shows so far with IFS I see no sign of changing despite the newly coined IFS Pro slogan.

The IFS is now at a critical stage where they can build an even bigger audience in Northern California’s Muay Thai scene. With War of the Heroes seemingly indefinitely shelved due to payment issues of insurance on a severely injured fighter on their event, it could be quite some time before Californians may see another War of the Heroes event.  Perhaps, never depending on how the issue is ultimately resolved.  For anyone wishing to see the public records detailing the incident from the California State Athletic Commission. The archives on hearings and judgements should be publicly accessible by the time of this writing.

The IFS seemed to acknowledge the need for publicity and press moving forward with their event.  So making full use of young and hungry writers the IFS proposed that they offer write ups of the event to many sites covering Muay Thai in the USA including my site, mymuaythai.com, and a host of others.  However, this was with one important caveat: all articles written were subject to the IFS editorial thumbs up before publication.  In effect, the IFS would determine what any site would have to say through these writers.

Enter Lauren Tharp, young and hungry and eager to make a good impression on a prospective client.  Lauren had made her offer to me and I respectfully told her I would be very willing to link to her press write up but that I cannot do a verbatim copy and paste of a press release.  And I was also equally frank about my issue with IFS’ truth in advertising (specifically for me the lack thereof).  After all I like and admire fighters such as Baxter Humby very much. It then became apparent to me that she had thus far not received payment despite actually getting her press release published on an MMA site.

Lauren therefore decided to make public her struggles with payment and her need of income as is typical of a young struggling writer. The issues she experienced in the fight industry such as it is, are not unlike fighters.  Speaking out brings risk that can include a blacklisting or other forms of sabotage that can impact careers to the point of ending them. For my opinion, it’s wrong.  In a broader sense beyond even hurting Muay Thai, it hurts people.  People, that most of the time want to do good and achieve what they can. And people that want to bring their love and enthusiasm for Muay Thai to their craft in writing. Ultimately, Lauren made her resignation public.

I am often asked what is the problem with USA Muay Thai.  Why isn’t it growing like it should?  Surely in America we have the population density and diversity that a special group of fighters and fights are going to emerge from this country.  And ultimately begin their conquest of the world in the sport they dearly love. My answer isn’t a lack of media coverage, a lack of decent paydays, sanctioning and regulatory corruption or even a lack of love for the sport.  To me those are symptoms of a larger issue.  In the USA we are too dishonest to others and with ourselves.  Until this problem can be abated or resolved in a meaningful way the problem will be perpetual.  A quick rule that should be applied and that everyone should hopefully know by now is simple: if you wouldn’t do it for free, don’t expect others to do it for free.

Thankfully, Lauren’s courageous stance paid off and payment due her was received. I am doubtful the IFS would have responded at all had it not been for Lauren standing up for herself.  And I respect that courage because I know it was not an easy step to take. And it was not without risk.

Lauren is also a previously published publicist working with Champions of Champions’ promotion where her pieces still reside to this date.  I am hopeful this has not soured Lauren on Muay Thai and her craft as it specifically applies to it.  Muay Thai needs people who write well and can add interest to fights. Press and promotions go hand in hand and always will. It also needs people that tell the truth no matter how they are gag-ordered, threatened or have payment withheld.

Title Wave

The announced Immortality 4 Fight night on March 26th, 2011 has been postponed until June 2011. Reportedly, Invincible Promotions  have chosen to move their Immortality 4’s date to be able to bring their audience a bigger and better fight card with a presumably suitable larger scale main event. More information and a confirmed date will be posted soon by the promoters.

Instead, taking place on March 26th, 2011 will be the Title Wave event. Though it is soon to say what match ups are already made, what can be expected is that one or more of the faces focused on in the poster art which includes Von Badato, Michael Badato, and Steve Moxon will be the main event fighter. Of the possible main event participants the competing weight of 67 kg with Michael Badato, 75 kg with Von Badato, or 72.5 kg with Steve Moxon is ripe with possibilities.

Moxon was  last seen in action against WBC Muay Thai Mexico champion  Luis Bio who he defeated by unanimous decision in December 18th, 2010 at the WCK and Tony Chen promoted Wu Lin Feng rules (essentially sanda rules) and Muay Thai show held over the course of 2 days in China.

The emphasis of this event  is for an overall smaller “local heroes” show on the 26th of March at The Castle Grand, Castle Hill. For more info and tickets please contact Stuart McKinnon 0425 364 574 or Reinhard Badato 0425 800 297

Jean Claude Van Damme Versus Somluck 3rd Site Change and Fairtex

Somluck Kamsing, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Phillip Wong

Since there has been regular inquiries on the status of 80s martial arts film star Jean Claude Van Damme and Thai gold medal Olympian boxer Somluck Kamsing an update was long overdue. According to http://www.citizenside.com Jean Claude is very intent on pressing onward with the bout.

Jean-Claude Van Damme wants back into the ring for a fight against the Thai legend Somluck Kamsing. Van Damme and the Thai Olympic medalist Kamsing met a few days ago in Siam Kempinski Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand on a press event.

On this occasion the two have signed a new contract to fight after the first signed contract was complete in December 2009. They agreed to meet by the end of the year in Bangkok for a modified rules Muay Thai fight.

Reportedly, more than ever, Van Damme seems determined to confront Somluck Kamsing in the ring. This fight is now scheduled to take place in November 2011. The news of the proposed fight was already known since the Cannes Film Festival of 2010 where Van Damme literally locked in reporters and assembled a press conference to announce it.

This fight as expected by fans and critics of Van Damme will be held at National Soccer Stadium in the Thai capital, the Rajamangala National Stadium. The battle that would initially have happened in 2010 in Las Vegas has since been announced that the venue would now be in Moscow, Russia and as of this writing the new site announced will be Bangkok, Thailand.

Finally, nothing happened last year largely due to a change of sponsor and especially the work schedule that overloaded Van Damme. Among his list of current projects for this year are:

  • JCVD 2011: Behind Closed Doors (ITV4)
  • Kung Fu Panda 2,
  • Cyborg (Director’s Cut / Opera-Version)
  • On The Town
  • Beur Rzhevskiy protiv Napoleon
  • Weapon Dragon Eyes.

The new promoter of the fight is now the current owner of the network of Fairtex Gyms internationally (USA, Japan and Thailand), Phillip Wong. Van Damme has, moreover, pledged to come and train at the Fairtex Muaythai Training Centre in Pattaya,Thailand the month before his confrontation with Somluck Kamsing. Images show very definitely Wong with Van Damme in the reality show ”Behind Closed Doors” he started for the English TV channel: ITV 4.

French Muay Thai legend and former champion of Thaiboxing, Guillaume Kerner was quoted about the battle ahead:

In light of what has made Somluck in the ring he can only win! Given that Van Damme has his career in films, nothing can be allowed to happen to him. It will be a very tight fight!

And finally  Béréniceotto, a close friend of Somluck Kamsing had this to say about the often delayed fight:

It’s definitely a battle over a promising title! Two stars will take the gloves and find their measure in a ring. On one side, the first Thai athlete to have won a gold medal for his country at the Olympics and on the other one of the most known international actors, especially known for his action movies. However, I suspect Van Damme carefully calculated to have that poster state: “Free him and all things are considered done … “

MTAA March 5th card

Stand-Up Promotions and The Commerce Casino brings to you the “Muay Thai National Championships” on March 5th, 2011.  This event follows a successful year ending King’s Birthday in 2010 which had Kevin Ross versus Malaipet Sitraprom in the fight of the year. Stand Up Promotions also hosted the “King’s Birthday Celebration” in December which earned the “fight of the year” award when Kevin Ross defeated Malaipet Sitprapom.  This year is off to a strong start in further proving the consistency of Montri Supanich and Standup Promotions as one of the more solid promoters in California, the west coast and in my opinion the United States.  At stake on March 5th, 2011 will be a WBC Muay Thai National Title fight and Muay Thai Association of America (MTAA) super fights which include 12 action-packed bouts.

The main event of the evening will feature rising United States nak muay and MTAA’s National Champion Joe “Stich ‘Em Up” Schilling against Saekson Muay Thai’s very own Chase Green for the WBC Super Middleweight Interim title.  Green has in the past fought and beaten some notable opponents in the past including  recently of Phuket, Thailand Cyrus Washington.

Joe Schilling has gone public with some of the struggles he has had with the WBC Muay Thai to get recognition and the seemingly fluid nature of their rankings. Schilling has been finishing his opponents in a no doubt fashion en route to earn his title shot.  Both Green and Schilling are lanky, powerful super middleweights and the bout has promise to bring significant fireworks in the ring. One would assume this interim title victory for either fighter would finally put them in line against long undefended super middleweight champion Jared Lara.

Recently turned professional fighter, Artem Sharoshkin will fight Texas’ Boorzoo Honargohar.  Artem is a technically sound fighter who is a frequent face on many of WCK Muay Thai’s events. Boorzoo Honargohar like Chase Green, also hails out of Saeksan Janjira’s gym in Texas.

The third professional fight of the evening has Joey Pagliuso of USKO gym. Fighting Pagliuso will be Jose Palacios of San Francisco, California.  Palacios fought a close match with Oakland’s Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat with Chunhawat becoming the victor of that fight by split decision. This fight will be an important fight for both fighters to move up in the rankings.

The rest of the under card features some of United States’ top amateurs who are looking to get a shot at an MTAA National Title.

Sevak Ohanjanyan vs. Beto Rodriguez for the Super Fight Muay Thai Cup.  The winner of the match will get a title shot against MTAA Super Welterweight Champion Buanthong Syvathong.

Gaston Bolanos vs. Alfred Kashakyan.

Also on the card:

Oscar Sanchez vs Bell Tran

Jonathan Puu vs Howard Jeon

Anthony Acosta vs Jose Flores

Charles Bisset vs Jason Rzepka

George Amiryan vs Marcos Guevarra

The doors open at 4pm, and first bout begins at 6pm.  As a fan I like seeing what MTAA and Montri Supanich are doing.  And the consistent quality of each succeeding event holds some promise towards bigger and better things in the future.

HGH's Future of Muay Thai

HGH Promotions, the new Muay Thai promotion company have officially announced their coming card for March 19th, 2011. HGH Promotions was formed by Liam Harrison (5x World Champion), Andy Howson (3x World Champion) and Clint Gordon who is a close associate of Howson and Harrison and a fitness and body condition coach. The team states that they want to build and develop Muay Thai in the United Kingdom (UK) as well as bring bigger events for Muay Thai. Recently, the HGH team have changed venues for the HGH first show to accommodate fans below the 18-year old age.

The first card is correctly named “The Future of Muay Thai” and will feature much of the UK’s younger talent and rising stars. The promotion has said one of their goals with the 1st of three expected shows to be held in 2011 is to develop the younger talent in Muay Thai for the UK but will not preclude involving more international talent in their future events.

The line up for the night’s fights is as follows:

Kyle Fella vs. Loz Reilly ISKA British title
Glen Crosthwaite Vs Alex Foremen ISKA English title
Luke Kennedy vs Billy Hatton ISKA English title

Undercard scheduled fights:

Luke Greenshields (Team Fearless) vs Mike Edwards (Hanuman) 5 rounds, 2 minutes per round

Ben Lucas (Liam’s Gym)vs Karl Stoddart (Jai) 5 rounds, 2 minutes per round

Luke Imeson (Bad Company) vs. Josh Kehoe (Sapphire) 5 rounds, 1.5 minutes per round

Adam Proctor (Golden Team) vs. Kieran Jones (Sapphire) 5 rounds, 1.5 minutes per round

Andy Goodrick (Wicker Camp) vs. Chris Ainsley (Team Phoenix)

Edward Long (Bad Company) vs. Kyle Revill (Wicker Camp)

Kenzie Roberts (Bad Company) vs. Koby Mcnamara (Golden Team)

HGH is apparently waiting  confirmation on a possible opponent for Kate Stables.

Ticket information should be presumably available at the official HGH web site as well as from the phone number listed on the poster.

USEACA Benefit Seminar

This Saturday March 5th, 2011 United South East Asia Cultural Association (USEACA) will be holding a 3 hour fundraising Martial Arts Seminar at Kalahi Martial Arts Academy in Mount Vernon, Washington. This seminar will consist of techniques from Muay Thai, Muay Boran, Muay Lao, and Kun Khmer. The seminar fee is $40. Proceeds of this seminar will be contributed to help Lou Faralan during his fight with Leukemia. USEACA beyond being a cultural and Muay Thai sanction regularly give back to the Southern Washington community and this is a sign that their spirit of giving of to the community isn’t lost with their growing profile and influence.

Lou Faralan runs the Kalahi Martial Arts Academy and offers Muay Thai and submission wrestling among many other martial art disciplines. Lou has been a long time fixture of the Washington and Northwest Muay Thai scene for quite some time.

In attendance will be Saohin Srisuk, Lou Faralan, John Chamkunthod, Ajarn Ting,  Boa Thangkeo, and Srab Sroeuy will be on hand to give instruction. I can personally say that this is about as complete of a seminar as one could hope for and it will be an especially rare opportunity to get personalized instruction from John Chamkunthod who has in the past worked with K-1 fighters and many top level United States and Canadian Thaiboxers.

Immortality Resurrection

Invincible Promotions brings the latest in the Immortality series with Immortality 4: Resurrection card. Main eventing the card will be Steve McKinnon versus Ben Edwards. Steve McKinnon nicknamed the Smashing Machine. Big Ben Edwards  was last seen at the K-1 grand Prix event in Seoul, Korea where he was knocked out by Allistair Overeem by a right overhand punch.

Steve McKinnon recently defended his super cruiserweight title against Brazil’s Eduardo Maiorino de Morais who has fought in 2 different weight categories in WBC Muay Thai contests. McKinnon has also been busy participating in the EnFusion kickboxing reality Tv show’s 3rd season, which focuses on 95 kg fighters.

Also notable on the card Michael Badato will be facing “Shaggy” Shannon King presumably at 75 kg. King is  a past A-1 champion. While Badato himself has been a champion for WKBF.

The remainder of the card has yet to be finalized but tickets should be available via Ticket Tek’s official site.
