WCK Card

WCK Muay Thai will be coming to the Las Vegas Hilton on Dec. 11th. Julie Kitchen will be rescheduled to fight Miriam Nakamoto the newly crowned world champion due to an injury Kitchen suffered while training. The main event will instead be a fight between WBC Muay Thai middleweight champion Craig Buchanan and challenger Jack Thames. The reigning champion Buchanan fought and won a closely matched bout in April with Buchanan edging a close decision victory.

Heath Harris looks to be maintaining a very busy schedule fighting with WCK Muay Thai as he will be making basically back to back appearances for WCK at Wu Lin Feng Spectacular on November 13th and for this December 11th show. This time Harris is set to fight Shawn Yarborough for the WBC light heavyweight title. Recently Yarborough lost to Steve Richards to take the IKKC light heavyweight title.  Going into the fight Yarborough remains the current light heavyweight title holder for the United States WBC Muay Thai title.

Long time competitors for WCK and Anthony Casterjon and Bryan Humes are also set to compete on the card.

Lamsongkram Chuwattana

At the Hero Legends in Malaysia Lamsongkram Chuwattana would fight Cao Yaomin of China.  The theme of the event was Kung Fu versus Muay Thai and Lamsongkram had much on his plate to prove since losing to Zhang Kai Yin at a Wu Lin Feng event held in the 2009 Muay Thai versus Kung Fu Challenge.

It would appear Lamsongkram had much to make up for and prove to himself and his fans. Watch the video below to see in Lamsongkram was successful in redeeming himself.

The fight took place at the weight category of 75 kg on October 9th, 2010 at the Arena of Stars in Malaysia.
Watch the fight below and decide for yourself if Lamsongkram successfully redeemed himself.

WBC Muay Thai Expands Regulatory Structure

WBC Muay Thai at Cancun

WBC Muay Thai’s 48th Convention in Cancun, Mexico has now concluded. If you often wondered how title matches were decided and many including myself wondered what the criteria was apparently that is now to be fully disclosed.

The WBC Muay Thai wrapped up its 2010 convention with a unanimous decision to expand its organization structure to include three federations representing the country groupings of Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas. Though as of this writing I have still not gotten a reply one way or the other about a rankings delineation for all the regions WBC Muay Thai will now cover

Broadly WBC Muay Thai has commited to:

establish rankings within the structure of three federations that would be used by the world ranking committee to establish top 30 rankings in the 19 weight divisions.

The expanded structure also includes establishment of country committees to organize and authorize national titles. The national champions would receive priority ranking in their federation and be positioned to contest a prestigious federation championship that would be a main stepping stone to a world title.

The reshaping of the organizational structure will see official title belts positioned in a vertical advancement to the world titles.

Roughly, this is the structure that has been laid out to conduct Muay Thai bouts under the WBC’s auspices:

National Titles

Approved by the country committee

International Titles

Where a national champion from one country challengers a national champion from another country

Federation Titles

Contenders for federation championship will be approve based on each federations official ranking.

Inter-Continental Titles

A federation champion challenges another federation champion for an Inter-Continental title. The winner will be top ranked in the world rankings for mandatory sanctioning for world title contest.

World Titles

Inter-Continental and Federation champions will be given high ranking to challenge top Thai boxers for world titles.

My hope is that moving forward WBC Muay Thai will list the rankings of each region also on their website. As I said before nothing provides clarity like disclosure and transparency.

King’s Birthday in the USA 2010

Standup Promotions King's Birthday

Much thanks goes to David Huerta for this news.  King’s Birthday is rapidly approaching and internationally promoters have been hard at work putting together cards to commemorate the day as big and as splashy as can be imagined. The United States is no exception. On Sunday December 5th, 2010 Standup promotions with Muay Thai Association of America is staging some big fights at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California.

Returning to action is Kevin Ross who has been keeping busy in recent times in Thailand fighting in the Toyota Cup Marathon. Ross has notably become perhaps the best know United States nak muay due to his increased profile in Thailand and his United States Muay Thai Federation (USMF) championship bout, WBC Muay Thai championship win among other high profile events.

Malaipet Sitraprom will be Ross’ opponent tho apparently this is to be at a lower catch weight than what Malaipet typically fights at. Malaipet has struggled with an apparent lack of focus and frankly desire.  So it should be interesting to see which version of Malaipet Ross is ultimately faced with.

Also on the card is from the East Los Angeles portion of California is David Huerta. Huerta holds a Muay Thai Association of America (MTAA) title.

It isn’t yet known if any titles are to be held for any of the bouts thus far but it looks like everything on the card will be under the WBC Muay Thai sanction.

For ticket information visit Muay Thai Association of America’s site or call 818-980-6688.

Buakaw Goes to Shootboxing

Buakaw, Shishido Hiroki, and Umeno

A very interesting turn of events has apparently taken place with Buakaw Por Pramuk in Japan. There had been confirmations and denials floating around the Por Pramuk camp for a long time about Buakaw’s future in K-1 MAX.  At one point Por Pramuk’s management assured everyone that Buakaw would be returning to the kickboxing promotion giant of Japan’s stable.  While at the same time there had been rumors that Buakaw was finished in Japan as a whole and would take all of his fights internationally in the future out of Japan. Buakaw was a unique entity in the K-1 ranks in that in his time away from K-1 MAX he fought full rules Muay Thai rules bouts and often.

It looks like it is official now that Buakaw will at last be making a long awaited return to Japan but not under the promotional banner of K-1 MAX but instead Shootboxing.  On October 15th Shootboxing held a press conference in Japan for its Global Tournament Shootboxing S-Cup.

Buakaw at the press conference

Buakaw said at the press conference that Shootboxing rules will not be a difficult adjustment to him and that he has watched many Shootboxing events and will be ready to fight. Cesar Takeshi the manager of Shootboxing said he was not yet certain if Buakaw would be in the S-Cup tournament or in a super fight. Buakaw himself he had no preference either way but would definitely not miss an opportunity to be in the tournament if it comes his way. Addressing directly his missing presence at the K-1 MAX final event Buakaw simply said “”My contract has ended and I’m in a new one now.”

Hiroki Shishido was present at the press conference. In their previous bout at K-1 MAX, Buakaw quickly KOed Shishido in K-1 MAX 2006. Shishido said about having a great debt to  Buakaw and if Buakaw gets the final spot in the tournament he wants to return the favor. Buakaw replied that Shishido is a star  fighter in Shootboxing so the fight would be gladly accepted if Buakaw is in the tournament.

Buakaw will now be joining fellow former K-1 MAX champion Andy Souwer in Shootboxing.  Both have apparently chosen against K-1 MAX who’s parent company still have not paid all the non-Japanese competitors who fought on their promotions.

The known lineup for S-Cup thus far is:

Andy Souwer (3 times the S-Cup champion, 2 times the K-1 World MAX)

Shishido (Shootboxing living legend)

Umeno (New Star Shootboxing)

Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett (MMA fighter)

Bovy. Sor Udomson (Muay Thai fighter)

Henri van Opstal (Team Souwer)

Greg Foley (WW Champion Shootboxing Australia)

And an 8th unconfirmed fighter yet to be named.

Luis Bio with WBC gold

Luis Bio fought the undefeated Alejandro Nunez for the WBC Muay Thai National title.  The fight took place at the WBC’s 48th Convention held in Cancun, Mexico. This marks the first time a Muay Thai bout has taken place at a WBC convention much less a WBC Muay Thai title bout.

Bio with his latest win over Nunez has extended his winning streak that includes Cyrus Washington and Norwood Walker.  What’s up next possibly for Bio could be a 4-man tournament that has potential to net Bio a $10,000 prize in China under the banner of a WCK Muay Thai promotion.

Much thanks goes to youtube uploader PEPERODRIGUEZNEWS for sharing the footage of the fight.

Bruce "Preacher" Macfie

Now you can see for yourself the fight that ended in some controversy as John Wayne Parr fights Bruce Macfie a third time.  There were some concerns about official impropriety raised by John Wayne Parr himself. See for yourself how the fight went and draw your own conclusions. This fight took place at the Evolution 21 card held on September 11th, 2010 at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Australia. The fight was to be the definitive 3rd match to decide the longtime rivalry between Parr and Macfie (or at least it was marketed that way).

International Fight Show 2010

Every promoter worldwide seems to be preparing for the magical December 4th to 6th date in time for King’s Birthday by scheduling the biggest dream fights for their events that they can. This time of year is always a fun time to be a Muay Thai fan. Italy it seems to be prepping its own show for this end. Team Polizzano-as Perlungher will bring International Fight Show 2010 on Saturday, December 4th, 2010 to the indoor stadium of Loano. The lineup so far known is:

Full Muay Thai Tournament Rules:

Kaoponlek (Thailand), recently won the Intercontinental Kombat League championship over Charles Francois in September. Kaoponlek is also former Lumpinee Stadium Champion and in recent times the  Contender Asia Qualifier champion for Italy.

Federic Diaz (France), Winner of the IFS 2009.

Claudio Amoruso (Italy), IFMA European champion 2008, Italy champion 70kg 2009.

And a 4th yet to be confirmed fighter.

Other fighters:

Irina Mazepa (Team Didier Le Borgne)

Matthew Nardulli (Team Perlungher)

Luis Maccione (Team Perlungher)

Nicola Magri (Team Perlungher)

Roberto Scanu (Sports Center Savona)

Tiziano Sguerso (Sports Center Savona)

Freason Lowrence (Kombat Gym – Pordenone)

Pretty exciting match-ups look very much in the works with the lineup named thus far. I am interested who and when the 4th competitor will be in the tournament. The matchup and fight draw should soon be known too and I will share the information as I learn it.
