Baxter 'One-Armed Bandit' Humby

Baxter Humby is a Muay Thai fighter from Los Angeles, California, USA. Baxter has held mulitple world titles is in Muay Thai including the Internaional Muay Thai Council (IMTC) World title at super welter weight, The IKKC USA champion, and the current challenger for the WBC National (United States) Muay Thai title at super welter weight. Along the way Baxter has compiled a very impressive record of 68 wins, 11 losses and only 1 draw. On May 29th, 2010 Baxter will fight for the WBC National super welter weight championship against Harris Norwood. We caught up with Baxter via phone 5-15-2010 to chat about his upcoming fight and some of his experiences in Muay Thai.

Baxter in China

Starting with the obvious question: How did you lose your arm?

I was born that way. I was struggling to hard to get out and my arm was caught on my mother’s umiblical cord and severed it in while I was still the womb.

What made you choose Muay Thai as a sport?

I grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba a town known for having some rough spots in it. I felt that Muay Thai was the most realistic of martial arts.  Muay Thai with it’s combinations applied directly to the streets for self-defense.

What sports did you prior to Muay Thai?

I ran competitively as a middle distance runner in the 1550 meter, 5K and 10k. I also ran for the Canadian National Track Team in 1992 in Barcelona and in Berlin in 1994.

What made you decide to make the move from Canada to Los Angeles, California USA?

I became a Canadian champion in Muay Thai and there weren’t many opportunities to fight. There are not many promoters in Winnipeg and not really anyone left to fight. I moved to keep growing in Muay Thai.

Who were your earlier influences for martial arts?

I liked Bruce Lee for martial arts in general and Don “The Dragon” Wilson for kickboxing.

What kind of adjustments have you had to make to be successful in Muay Thai  for having one shorter arm?

In Muay Thai I use hard kicks and switch up stances from orthodox to south paw. For clinching I use more front elbows and jab and cross while switching stances.

You’ve already fought twice in MMA how have you adapted to MMA?

I practice Brazillian jiu jistsu diligently.  I also use my elbow on my arm to reach in when in close.  I also compensate more for particular moves.

I understand there was some difficulty with the California State Athletic Commission’s licensing board. [An amendment by the California State Athletic Commission requesting that any applicant missing all or part of a limb be denied a license was later appealed]

I was able to appeal and win the right to compete back in 2006.

How do you see the level of Muay Thai in the United States progressing?

It’s growing extremely well. There are now lots of promoters bringing in talent from all over the world to compete with American Muay Thai boxers.

What are some of the civic activities and community work you are involved in?

I do a lot of charitable work and speak to students in schools. I also work with Operation Rebound. Operation Rebound works with veterans of the military who have suffered permanent physical injuries. I teach them Muay Thai and MMA and I travel all over the USA to do it.

In the Spider Man 3 film you did some stunt work.  How did the offer to do it come about?

I have a friend of mine who is a stunt man in the film industry and the producers needed a one-armed for a stunt where Spider Man punches through the Sand Man’s torso.  I was also known from some of the film work I did in the past like the Discovery Channel’s Amped.

You also participated in Shootboxing in Japan.  How were you received over there?

They loved it!  And they were amazed I could pull it off with one hand.  I beat the 152 lbs Korean champion. The opprotunity came about through Carter Wong, president of the Wuen Hop Kuen Association who is a good friend of Cesar Takashi.

Where did you train at for Muay Thai and where do you train at now?

I used to train at Sik Tai in Winnipeg, Canada and I now train at the Muay Thai Academy in Los Angeles, California.

Who do you train with for your MMA skills?

I train with “Judo” Gene LeBell and Gokor Chivichyan to supplement the jiu jitsu training I already do with Eddie Bravo. With Gokor and Gene I focus on ankle locks and judo specifically adapted for MMA. I want to be on the Ultimate Fighter Season 11 but Zuffa’s people said I’d have to prove myself in MMA before.  So I now have some fights in MMA and am ready for the Ultimate Fighter.

You have well over 65 fights to your resume now in a career nearing 15 years.  What do you feel you have left to accomplish in the sport of Muay Thai?

Coming up soon I want to fight and win the WBC National Muay Thai championship at super welter weight.

Baxter Humby connects with a kick

What so far has been the most rewarding accomplishment you’ve accomplished in Muay Thai?

My most rewarding moment was winning my first world title in Las Vegas.  It felt like the most authentic validation of all my hard work and fights.

With your upcoming  fight for the WBC Muay Thai national championship against Harris Norwood what can we expect?

I’m going to get in close and use elbows more.

My first memory of you fighting was against John Wayne Parr in the United States. Parr seemed confused with you early on in that fight. What was your strategy in that fight?

I had seen John Wayne fight before and so I used angles and fought smart.  Eventually John Wayne caught me but I was only stunned and not seriously hurt.  I was pissed that my coach at the time stopped the fight.

Leading up to fights how does your nutrition and diet change?

2 weeks before fight time I don’t drink alcohol at all.  I also eat low carbohydrates and increase proteins.  I also eat more vegetables.

Do you have any final words for your fans?

The only limits you have are the ones you put on yourself.

Much thanks goes out to Baxter Humby for his generosity spending the time with me on the phone and for Frank Lim in helping me transcribe this interview.  I’ve seen Baxter now a total of twice live and he always impresses me with a skill and ring smarts.  Baxter will be fighting for the WBC MUay Thai National Championship May 29th, 2010 at Holly Wood Park Casino in Los Angeles, California. You can also follow Baxter on his offical site.

Just a reminder via Dan Green that Buakaw is due to make his first appearance in London, UK on may 29, 2010. Vuyisile Colossa VS Zhou Jian Kun

Vuyisile Colossa

Vuyisile Colossa VS Zhou Jian Kun from the April 3, 2010 Wu Li Feng Semi Final match. at 70kg /154lbs. Vuyisile will also be participating as a cast member and competitor on the upcoming Enfusion reality television program.

It looks like  the final is coming soon too though I don’t know when the actual broadcast schedule begins. From the Enfusion site:

Enfusion is on the way to Portugal, the fabulous city of Lisbon will host the finals of Enfusion. Coaches will battle it out for prize money, and the 4 finalist of Enfusion will bring the exciting climax to Test of the Champions, plus top fighters from Portugal will round out this event. The world eyes will focus on this special event, stay tuned for more excitement and news as Enfusion “Test of the Champions” reaches its much anticipated conclusion.

I guess anyone going to this event is going to get a spoiler for the entire show before it even airs but based on the lineup it could be a pretty exciting event with even the coaches participating. And just based on what I know of the cast it’ll almost for certain be more of an even card of matchups than anything that ever aired with the apparently defunct Contender Asia.

Ultimate Thai 5 Featuring Kaoklai Vs. Duarte

Ultimate Thai 5

Yesterday I reported on what is the apparent demise of the incredible Slamm! series of Muay Thai events. But it looks like there could be a worthy successor to the excellent Slamm series of events on the way up in the form of Ultimate Thai 5.  Shark Events in Paris, France have a pretty insane looking card ready for June 10, 2010. Among the names on the card are Kaoklai, Duarte, Camara and other greats.  Apparently as part of the event the fights may also be a part of a bigger tourney for the MuayThaiTV trophy (this card will be round 3 of the tournament) which I am assuming PPV web carrier muaythaitv.com will be bringing in a shared broadcast. The card will be full Muay Thai rules for 5X3 rounds and as I know it so far is:

Fight 1: 66.6kg

Sofiane Derdega Vs. Herbert Womaleu

Fight 2:  66.6 kg

Raouf Beliouze Vs. Ibraham Chiahou

Fight 3: 66.6kg

Oliver Tchetche  Vs. Thomas Adamandapolous

Fight 4: 66.6kg

Boubacar Konta Vs. Amar Lounas

Fight 5: 66.6kg

Mamadou Diabira Vs. TBA

Fight 6: Weight not yet announced

Aurelien Duarte Vs. Kaoklai Kaenorsing

Fight 7: Weight not yet announced

Pascal LeFleur Vs. TBA

Fight 8: Weight not yet announced

Gregory Choplin Vs. Jonathan Camara

Headlining the main card will be Aurelien Duarte and Kaoklai Kaenorsing.  Aurelien is a fighter who has complied a record of  more than 100 fights in Muay Thai and kick boxing. Duarte has amassed a very impressive record including becoming a seven time champion of the world and 3 time champion of Europe.  Duarte has mostly been campaigning at about 176lbs/80kg.

Kaokali is best known internationally for his K-1 fights in which he was able to beat much bigger opponents such as Alexei Ignashov and even knocking out Mighty Mo with a flying round kick.  Kaoklai has fought as large as crusier weight and heavy weight in Muay Thai so I am very curious what weight the two meet at. Alos of note is the age difference between the two with Duarte nearing the late 30s and Kaoklai relatively young for a ring fighter is in his late 20s.

With little additional hype I can tell you the rest of the card is equally impressive and its a virtual who’s who of France’s best nak muay.

Those of you lucky enough to witness the card live can get tickets at http://www.francebillet.com. Tickets seem relatively inexpensive with a starting cost of 20 EU all the way up to 50 EU. But those of who cannot see in person can still see it live at muaythaitv.com for about 9 Eu. Personally speaking I haven’t always had the best of luck with live web pay-per-views but I haven’t had as bad of an experience as I have 2x with the Jamacia fiasco. That said this is the 5th in the Ultimate Thai series so its an experienced promoter and muaythaitv.com has done some ppvs I happily purchased and was always very glad I did from them. I’m going to give it a try and I expect it to be as competitive and high quality card as it looks.

Yodchat Fairtex Vs. Trijak Sitjomtrai

Yodchat Fairtex

From the main event of Lumpinee stadium on Saturday night, February 21, 2009 Yodchat Fairtex takes on Trijak Sitjomtrai at 128lbs/58.6kg. Yodchat is in blue trunks and Trijak is in red trunks. It looks like the prize winner got win their purse and the keys to a new Toyota truck. Without too much of a spoiler I’ll just say: Don’t blink or you’ll miss the finish.

Buakaw Comes to Wu Lin Feng!

Buakaw Por Pramuk

Wu Lin Feng is staying busy.  It seems not terribly long ago I announced the USA versus China card being held in Wu Lin Feng (brought to you in part by USA Muay Thai promoter, Dennis Warner) when yet another card was announced with some pretty crazy names on it.  But the one name that stands out as the most recognizable even to casual Muay Thai fans is none other than former 2X K-1 MAX champion and star, Buakaw Por Pramuk.

The card is announced to take place June 19th, 2010 at Zhengzhou City, Henan Province in the Republic of China.

Some of the other big names will be the now legendary Saenchai Sor Kingstar, and Samranchai 96Penung. Some things of note: the official Por Pramuk site confirms the date and also apparently Buakaw’s popularity is so pervasive in China there is now an official Por Pramuk gym in China.  Lastly Dennis Warner has created enough of an apparent splash in Wu Lin Feng that the USA based promoter has even made some rounds with the Chinese sports press.

I only wonder how Buakaw will fit the Wu Lin Feng date into his schedule so soon after fighting Jordan Watson at the MSA at Excel card.  It does however seem apparent Buakaw is indeed done with K-1 MAX and will be fighting in full rules Muay Thai assignments internationally for the foreseeable future. Looks like WU Lin Feng is continuing to grow and with the added star power of Buakaw it can only get bigger.

Holland Versus Thailand Cancelled?

Slamm fighters

With hard economic times around the world and now Thailand’s red shirt crisis it seems times are hard on Muay Thai internationally.  Recently, what promised to be nothing short of a Muay Thai fan’s dream card  evaporated in Italy when Alessandro Gotti disappeared and turned his phone off, leaving co-promoters, sponsors and fighters wholly in the dark. Kem would have friend Sindy Huyer look after his affairs in Italy while Kem departed for Thailand Wednesday. Sadly, it seems another promotion has joined what has become an increasing statistic of the departed Muay Thai promoter. That promotion would appear to be Holland’s Slamm.

Slamm had become known for pitting some of Holland’s elite against Thailand’s best known names of international Muay Thai such as Rayen Simson, Yodsaenklai, Cosmo Alexandre and Orono Vor Petchpun. It grew more and more in a nation dominated by K-1 rules style kickboxing and modified Muay Thai. Against the grain Slamm offered match-ups with Full Muay Thai rules with Holland’s best against Thailand’s international best nakmuay.

Slamm seemed like only bigger and better things were in it’s future. Slamm events were near universally well received and for my personal bias the match ups were things of dreams. The brain child of Milton Felter and Maikel Polanen, Slamm had enough momentum to truly push through with real Muay Thai to audiences who had never seen it. Then suddenly it just stopped.

From Muaymag:

Recently, Mr.Elfrin, a major sponsor, has quit. Mr.Michael has changed his business line. He opened pub and massage centers at his hometown in South America, Holland, and Europe. They do not wish to lose money for boxing match because many sponsors have left lately.

I can only hope this is a temporary stop and both return to bring more Slamm events and continue making the fights and match-ups that had Muay Thai fans internationally excited.

Update.  I have been contacted by one of the PR Associates with Slamm and it looks like this may have actually been only rumor after all!
