Here is another bout from the Kung Fu King promotion held in ChongQing city, China pitting Muay Thai against Sanda.

Wehad Vs. Cao Yao Min

From day one of the 3-19-2010 to 3-21-2010 fights between Sanda and Muay Thai Wehad fights Cao Yao Min. Take note of the elbow pads and my overall take on these events. In this particular fight I actually may have called it for the Sanda fighter but judge for yourself with the fights further in this post.

Muay Thai in America Event

By Fatsoking

Just got this piece of news about a Muay Thai event coming to the USA soon.

Muay Thai in the USA poster

On April 3rd, 2010 the International Muay Thai Federation and Atma Sphere are bringing a pretty good card to the United States.  Headlining this card we have Malaipet versus Pruvost. With sort of a grudge match Romie Adanza will again fight the United Kingdom’s Muay Thai standout Andy Howson. The event begins April 3rd, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the Barker Hangar 3021 airport Avenue Santa Monica, California. You can purchase tickets at http://www.ticketmaster.com

Also notable is it looks like Muay Thai in America will have an open registration booth for casting of an American reality TV show about Muay Thai.  I am speculating it will be a tournament style sort of show with Muay Thai like It’s Showtime or the Contender Asia series. Beyond these guesses I have no idea what the specifics are or could be. Anyone interested can get in touch with them either at the registration booth or online at http://www.muaythaiinamerica.com

I’ll provide results on the show as I learn about them.  Thanks again for reading.

Kung Fu Versus Muay Thai: The 3 day fights

•March 29, 2010 • Leave a Comment

By Fatsoking

It’s been a busy past week but now it’s a new week and I have some new fights for everyone.

Sanda Versus Muay Thai

Due to popular demand I have again uploaded more fights between these two styles of Sanda and Muay Thai. This time around fights were held over the course of three days from March 19th, 2010 to March 21st, 2010  in ChongQing city of China. I put the fights of this event here with one thing that should be clearly understood to anyone reading despite style preference:  the outcome is the outcome. Despite the rules disallowing knee strikes to the head and the inclusion of elbow pads, the rules were agreed upon by both sides. The format was also  accepted including the regulation staff and referees from China by the Thai team.

That said, let’s explore the facts.  The fact is that Sanda fighters’ records outside of China in non-Sanda rules is pretty poor.  In shootboxing they’ve repeatedly been eliminated and lost.  And the rules in Shootboxing have more common ground with Sanda then not as they also include throws but with the added bonus of standing submission moves.  Shootboxing even call their sport “standing vale tudo”.

By no means would I say the Sanda fighters are unskilled. Matter of factly they can fight and some of the China contingent can fight very well.  What’s become tiresome is the whole ‘my style is best’ mentality. And this mentality is what feeds the false air of invincibility permeated by fan boys from both sides.

Karuehard Vs. Ba Ta Er

I have and always will support the Muay Thai side of this if only for the unbalanced rules and format Thais knowingly put themselves into.  The problem is what happens in these contests repeatedly has as long of a history for as long as these style versus style contests have been alive. The referee typically allows time for a Sanda fighter to clinch to execute a throw however sloppy or weak the throw is yet the moment a Thaiboxer engages in a clinch he is immediately separated.  It’s the very reason why these sort of contests aren’t really taken too seriously by most hardcore Muay Thai fans. For my opinion, once a match takes away knee strikes to the head and face and adds in pads to the elbows; the entire contingent proclaiming Sanda superiority over all else becomes laughable altogether. The sandbagging and outright running away by a Sanda fighter really needs no explanation.

And yes I have seen the claims of Sanda being so much superior to Thaiboxing, Dutch kickboxing, Japanese kickboxing and boxing.  Sanda even pulled a trick out of the K-1 hat and put in non-descript boxers with shoes on and not allowed to kick. I guess they learned from the founders of making artificial advantages in kickboxing.

What separates Muay Thai’s track record from Sanda is that there have been foreigners that have beaten Thais. Thais have a much more realistic and balanced claim to make in their matches of foreigners versus homeland fighters.  A foreign boxer like Ramon Dekkers is deservedly a legend in the Thai Muay Thai fans hearts. The rules applying to these contests have been the exact same rules the Thais have competed under. Overall these events are much more balanced and give you a clearer idea of a fight’s outcome with balanced rules and even judging.

Now with my observations out of the way –  to the fights.  First up is Karuehard Vs. Ba Ta Er.

The Professional Boxing Association of Thailand (PBAT) convened to report on their findings for the year 2009 with focus on fighters overseas and their supervision.

Professional Boxing Association of Thailand

On March 22nd, 2010 PBAT president Somchart Charoenwatcharawit announced preparations for a 10-year strategy that will include planning for Thaiboxers current and future for their activities after fighting. Much of these plans include aiding promotion in Muay Thai.

In January 2009 an event was announced for March to coincide with Nai Khanom Tom in March, international Muay Thai matches to honor Her Majesty the Queen in August, Muay Thai workshops in September, and matches to honor the King in December.  The PBAT also reported on  multiple workshops for referee training in January 2009.

The Professional Boxing Association of Thailand (PBAT) has reported on its progress made in 2009 and is preparing to implement a 10-year strategic plan, while focusing on its role to supervise the Thai fighters fighting overseas. On March 22 in Bangkok, PBAT president Somchart Charoenwatcharawit chaired the annual meeting of 2010.

PBAT said it has responded to complaints on Muay Thai issues and helped solve problems for current and former fighters as well as supporting activities of the World Professional Muaythai Federation (WPMF) and other organizations.

PBAT has used its authority granted by Thailand’s Boxing Sport Act of 1999 over Thai fighters fighting in overseas matches, saying that it has issued 97 permits for such fighters. The association also reported on its participation in four subcommittees of the boxing commission overseeing promotion and development, discipline, and supervision on officials. PBAT has submitted its 10-year strategic plan for the period of 2010 to 2019 to the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), who will provide funding.

For the Love of the Art

I want to introduce you to two people pursuing their interest in Muay Boran.  Anuar and Jermaine came to my attention when my friends at Boxxtomoi told me about the two of them giving a demonstration at a Z1 event.

Anuar and Jermain give a demonstration of Muay Boran

I normally don’t follow all branches of Muay Thai’s roots especially the more esoteric family tree that is Muay Boran. It seems a lot of people into Muay Boran are almost interested in Muay Boran for the sake of trying to be esoteric.

But it became evident to me that Anuar and Jermain’s love of not only Muay Boran but Muay Thai is very real and sincere. The two come from the Khairul sri Chaiya school held daily at Titiwangsa Park in Kuala Lampur, Malayasia.  It’s a fairly small and underground class.

In addition to giving Muay Boran demonstrations at Z1 events the two have volunteered their time to help events out for Muay Thai events and promotions. Much of their volunteered work included the less glamorous grunt work of flyer distributing. When asked why they give their time so freely they replied “It’s for our love to Muay Thai”

Ling Lom demonstration

Anuar and Jermaine maintain a site covering their interest in Muay Boran.  Check them out at their site http://www.muayboran66.blogspot.com/

And thanks again for reading.

WBC President Meets with Thailand Prime Minister

•March 26, 2010 • Leave a Comment

By Fatsoking

The World Boxing Council (WBC) though being relatively new at independent sanctioning for Muay Thai is making some big moves. In early March 2010 Jose Suliaman, president of the WBC met with Thailand’s Prime Minister to discuss Muay Thai safety. Although other independent sanctioning bodies in Muay Thai get their share of press and in my opinion a great deal more than their deserved share of press the WBC’s latest actions seemed to go mostly under the radar.

Jose Suliaman And Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva

The focus for the meeting between WBC President Jose Suliaman and Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Veijajiva was on safety. Suliaman made a plea for the establishment of a Thai national  medical commission covering both international boxing and Muay Thai. The Prime Minister has agreed he will begin with an intial finding committee in order to compile research data that is germane to the creation of such a committee.

The Prime Minister also included life after fighting and wanted to ensure that there would be work programs set up for boxers who underwent drug addiction rehabilitaion to prevent drug addiction and relapsing back into drug use.  It should be noted the Prime Minister himself has undergone drug rehabilitation.

Suliaman said on drug addiction: Drug addiction is the death of people. Rehabilitation brings these dead people back to life, but they will relapse if they don’t get work and live with self esteem

Sulaiman also commented on the WBC’s role in advancing Muay Thai internationally.

“His Majesty wanted the great Muay Thai boxers to attain the status of WBC Muay Thai world champions and to compete at the highest level possible,” Sulaiman said. “The WBC under General Kovid has now put Muay Thai onto the highest level in the world. We have established rankings in 19 weight divisions and the WBC green belt is awarded to world, international and national champions worldwide. “Since the WBC took Muay Thai under its umbrella everyone knows the difference between Muay Thai and kickboxing.”

Hopefully the needs for safety in Muay Thai both in Thailand and in the world gets more attention. Unlike some of Suliaman’s activities this is actually one in my opinion that has merit. While this particular effort gets quite a bit less notice than the creation of another trinket title or indulgence in a vanity project with reality television programming it deserves much more.  Thanks for reading.

Muay Thai versus Kung Fu Part 5: Lamsongkram

•March 25, 2010 • Leave a Comment

by Fatso King

From the Kung Fu versus Muay Thai Challenge of 2009 at 75kg Lamsongkram Chuwattana fights Zhang Kai Yin.

Lamsongkram Chuwattana

A few months back a challenge was rendered allegedly from a team of Thailand’s Muay Thai camps to of all places the Shaolin Temple of Foshan, Guangdong province in China. Excerpts from the story quoted the five famous Thaiboxers as saying that they wanted to “wipe out the Shaolin Temple”. Instead however a team of Sanda fighters picked up the challenge and I offered my rant about it.

Zhang Kai Yin

The rules of this bout and the entire event disallowed knee strikes to the head but allowed full Sanda rules.

Now you can see the fight between Lamsongkram and Zhang Kai Yin and see if the rules had anything at all to do with the fight’s outcome.
