WAMTAC event March 6th, 2011

A lineup has been together for the rapidly approaching March 6th, 2011 card coming from World Amateur Muay Thai Association of Canada (WAMTAC). It looks like participation is going to be good and another important step towards developing the amateur fighters of Toronto and Ontario has been taken despite the CMTC-A party line that a Provincial Sport Organization must be place.

Tentative Lineup so far:

Amin Almelik (Warrior) vs Roy Candelaria (Southside) – 135 lbs

Bryce Johnson (Caged Dragon) vs Paul Schick (Redmption) – 155 lbs

Eric Sun (Warrior) vs Raul Rojas (Southside) – 140 lbs

Rob Mudford (Caged Dragon) vs Jeremy Crooks( Redemption) – 135 lbs

Tom Styres (Caged Dragon) vs Ivan Merida (Phady’s) – 190 lbs

Craig Renwick (Phady’s) vs Paul Martin (Kingston Muay Thai) – 190 lbs

Lyndsay Austin (Scorpion) vs Andrew Stevens (Southside) – 155 lbs

Todd Whetter (Caged Dragon) vs Jason (Tiger Gym) – 165lbs

Ralph Klubinsky (Caged Dragon) vs Preston Pierce (Southside) – 175 lbs

Main Event

Alex Rozicki (Caged Dragon) vs Barry McDonald (Redemption) – 155 lbs

Also it is important to make a clarification that this is not WAMTAC’s first sanction event, it is in fact WAMTAC’s 5th event, it’s 4th event in the Province of Ontario (the 1st was in the province of PEI) and the 1st in the city of Toronto, which is the largest and most densly populated city of Canada both in terms of general population as well as Muay Thai schools. Due to WAMTAC’s research and not an insignificant amount of litigation Ontario can in fact hold Muay Thai bouts and begin building their own future in the sport of Muay Thai.

Tickets are also available via the Warrior Muay Thai website.

Keddle Vs. Francois

The United Kingdom has been a very place for Muay Thai especially over the past weekend with Super Show Down and the England versus Portugal event barely in the books as complete. Barely over a week later Semtex gym of the UK will stage another Muay Thai event with at least the main event promising some pleasing fight fire works to come.

Kieran Keddle of the Semtex gym in the United Kingdom makes a much anticipated return to action on the Semtex promoted Xplosion 2: aftershock card. Semtex gym will be hosting Keddle’s opponent in standout French nak muay, Francois “Karlito” Charles, a recently crowned World Professional Muay Thai Federation (WPMF) champion. Charles won the WPMF championship against countryman Alexandre Boyance at 66 kg. Both fighters in the main event are very decorated fighters though Keddle has been inactive lately focussing instead on building his business and working at Semtex gym.

Among Kieran Keddle’s accomplishments he has won the following titles:

  • WMTO Light Welterweight English Championship in 1998
  • WKA Welterweight British Champ in 1999
  • WMTO Welterweight British Champ 1999
  • WAKO Pro Welterweight British Champ 1998
  • WAKO Pro World Welterweight Champ 2002 (Full Thai Rules)

Kieran Keddle is also the first ever Englishman to win in Lumpini against a Thai opponent.

Francois Charles has been very busy, as seems to be typical of French nak muay. His current record includes 38 fights, 32 wins, 25 by way of knockout with only  6 losses. Charles has been:

  • 6 times French Muay Thai Champion
  • 2 times European Champion (WPMF)

Charles competed in the Queens Birthday event in Thailand in 2009 where he made a good account of himself.  Charles also participated in King’s Birthday in 2009 where he also fought and won.

The remainder of the card is still being filled out but expected to participate are many of the Semtex gym notables such as Hayleigh Jane Clarkson, Women’s English ISKA 57 kg champion and Darron Chan an IKF Southern champion.

Ticket information is available by emailing Semtex gym at the ir email address: semtexgym@hotmail.co.uk

Journey Fight Night Featuring Sugar Cane Coke Chunhawat

Journey Muay Thai

Journey Fight Night is an 8-man full rules Muay Thai tournament set to happen in Calgary, Canada under Trevor Smandych’s watchful eye as a new promoter. Trevor Smandych is a former protegé of Mike Miles’ gym also of Calgary.  Trevor is now in his own gym and is launching his own promotion. I am impressed with the ambitiousness of this event and how far reaching Trevor seems to be into United States’ talent pool.  The 140-pound tournament will feature notable Untied States competitors including Coke Chunhawat, Kevin Ross, Mark DeLuca, and Justin Greskiewitz.

Representing the Canadian competitors so far are Matt Embree, Nate Smandych, Josh Palmer, and Parwez Ghulam. Matt Embree comes out of Toronto, Ontario and Siam No.1 gym but has spent a good portion of his time fighting and training in Thailand. Ghulam trains under now in Calgary Shane Campbell who is one of the star students of Alin Halmagean’s Iron Tiger Muay Thai of Toronto.

“Sugar Cane” Coke Chunhawat will be making a swift return to the ring after a second round stoppage of Scott Leffler in Primm, Nevada on 12 February 2011 at the Lion Fight Promotion. Notably Matt Embree is also on the card who Coke defeated in September to capture the WBC Muay Thai National title.  Kevin Ross another former rival of Coke, defeated Coke in the Northern California promotion War of the Heroes. Coke brings significantly more experience as a fighter than his competitors but reportedly takes this event very seriously and has begun training very hard.

Kevin Ross is also returning to action quickly after fighting Thailand’s Sittisak Por Sirichai which he lost by split decision.  Prior to that bout Ross tallied a unanimous decision win in a match against USA based Thai fighter Malaipet. Interesting note here, both Ross and Chunhawat have both stated they would like an opportunity to fight against one another and perhaps both will get their wish in this coming event.

The schedule begins with March 5th, 2011 beginning the quarter final fights, in June 11th, 2011 the semi-finals begin, and in October 29th, 2011 the finals will commence. I like the intial looks of this.  And hopefully this will be the beginning of a circuit of competition that will become very busy between the United States and Canada.

Though this is a World Muay Thai Council (WMC) sanctioned event, international sanction politics aside: these are meaningful fights and it seems Trevor Smandych has recognized the value of this and has in essence pieced together a card featuring the best 140lbs Muay Thai fighters all of North America has offered. Glad to see that the matchmaking in this event recognizes that the fights bring value to the sanction and not the opposite.

Ticket purchasing and information is available at www.ticketpro.ca

Update Kevin Ross will not be participating due to injuries suffered from Ross’ bout with Sittisak Por Sirichai at Lion Fight

Michael Dicks scheduled to face Samingprai

This weekend SuperShowDown happens in Scotland with main event fighter Michael Dicks set to face Samingprai.  In the past Michael Dicks has won the UKMF English title, British title, SIMTA British title and WMC Intercontinental title. Ultimately Michael Dicks has said that he’d like a chance to revenge his loss against top level nak muay Andrei Kulebin from Belarus. In their previous bout Kulebin KOed Dicks in the first round.

The rest of the card has very solid looking match ups on paper, which to me has always been the mark of a good card: well matched fights. Appearing in order of fights on the card are:

1. Brad Newlands (Griphouse, Caley Muay Thai). vs. Carle Alderson (Team Hanuman)

2.  Michael Roach (Carnage Muay Thai) vs. Rob Horrocks (Supergym, Leeds)

3. Darren O’Connor (TMAS) vs. Robin Downer (Douglas Muay Thai)

4. Mark Casserly (Chupasart, Dublin) vs. Ally Smith (Wossobama)

5. Will Boyle (SMTC) vs. John Douglas (Douglas Muay Thai)

6. John Dennis (Bad Company, Leeds) vs. Keith McLachlan (Eclipse Muay Thai)

7.  Timucin Yildirum (Griphouse) vs. Paul Norton (Chupasart, Dublin)

8. Davy Macintosh (Bad Company, Leeds) vs. Stevie Brown (Wossobama) for the UNited Kingdom Muaythai Federation (UKMF) British title.

9. Adrian Wedolowski (Griphouse) vs.  Keith Middleton (Aberdeen Muay Thai) for the UKMF Scottish title

10.  Liam Harrison (Bad Company, Leeds) vs. Petchasawin (Sangmorakot gym, Bangkok, Thailand)

11.  Michael Dicks (Darlington) vs. Samingprai (Kiatphontip Gym, Bangkok, Thailand)

12. Damien Trainor (K-Star, Brimingham) vs. Phetnamchai (Jitti Gym, Bangkok, Thailand)

Interesting to note that Liam Harrison will basically have back to back matches against known and dangerous Thai talent with Petchsawin first fighting Harrison this weekend.  And in April he will be rematched against Saenchai Sor Sinbi Muay Thai.
