More WMC Communiques with John Cockburn

WMC Logo

More WMC mails have appeared on the web and I am sharing them here so that those questioning which parties’ loyalties lie with whom and perhaps a more definitive answer to what started some of the ongoing issues. As of this date there are approximately 5 remaining members in Muay Thai Austraalia with likely more defections set to happen. There are some very serious topics being discussed here including perhaps unauthorized use of signatures on file being approached. Also strange is Stephan Fox’s direct references to organized crime cartels.

The first mail that got the ball rolling from John Cockburn:

Hi
Have a read of the below
I am not exactly sure what Stefan is driving at. I think he is driving at is that unless athletes based in Thailand are part of us ( and no doubt going to WMC events) then the various embassies based in Thailand will not grant vizas to their home countries to let the athletes out to compete. I have not thought it through but it seems to me that this may be bad in law as a concept
He wants our letterhead on file for him to use for;
1. Aussie athletes in Thailand then travelling to other countries?
2. Overseas athletes coming to Australia?
This raises issues to my mind that the nature of the relationship of the Federation to the WMC needs to be squarely addressed. I am not sure if I sent to you some earlier communication from Stefan where he says that the national federations are not members of the WMC. I should say that neither he or Dr Sakchye are able to or willing to produce a copy of the WMC Constitution ( not IFMA). Many others are very concerned that this is somehow a frolic by Stefan so he can deal with promoters that are at odds with the nfs – certainly the timing of such corresponded with like difficulties.
I will call to have a chat if that is ok
regards John

The following is Fox’s response:

Stephan Fox

> John, I told the girls not to reply to your email. I will let it go and they
> will, too. Again, you worded this like a lawyer “somehow offended you”.
> That’s not much of an apology. Let me give you an example of how I would
> have worded this.
> Hi Girls,
> I know there has been a lot of tension between the IFMA international office

> again. I hope we an just pick up the telephone and talk to each other and
> work it out as a team. I look forward to seeing your girls at the World
> Championships. I promise to bring some Australian chocolate.
> A letter as simple as this would give you the respect. I apologise at least
> once a week to make up for my bad temper and manners with a nice lunch to
> keep the troops moving forward. When you learn to do this then you can
> manage all the different personalities involved in our sport because one
> minute you have to sit with the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan and the next
> minute with the head of the Yakuza or Hell’s Angels. Both of them must get
> your attention and respect. Anyway, I will leave it at this and I hope there
> is hope.
>

> Stephan

> Subject: RE: 2009 IFMA World Championships – RSVP 9 July

> Dear Natalie and Charissa
>
> Stefan has informed me you are uposet with me. I am sorry this is the case
> and apologise if I have somehow offended you.
>
> Hopefully we can move forward together in the best interests of the sport.
>
> Regards John Cockburn

Accusations have now gone out that Cockburn was fired and did not resign as has been announced.  Ironically now there has also been allegations against John Cockburn for being dictatorial though it seems all parties agree that he conducted business with in normal acceptable protocol and within legal definitions.  I will keep updating Cockburn’s parting of ways with WMC as details become available.

Queen’s Cup Challenger Series 2010

Thailand VS. Challenger Queens Cup

Toli Makris, Songchai Ratanasuban protege is putting a card together which I have to assume by the announced schedule is the Thailand Vs. Italy installment of Thailand versus Challenger. Songchai has worked with Toli’s present promotional arm Elite Boxing to make sure this one land’s on Queen’s Birthday 2010.

The event will be a part of the festival of fights at the 2010 Queen’s Cup on August 12 at Sanam Luang in Bangkok.

The Queen’s Cup, which is the biggest event in the muaythai calendar for female fighters, is officially promoted by Songchai’s company, One Songchai Promotions. This year’s event will be marked by the first time Elite Boxing will be co-promoter for it.

As part of the agreement, four TVC fights will be incorporated into the Queen’s Cup fight card. However, the biggest news is that the incorporation of TVC into the Queen’s Cup means that there will also be a break from tradition as male fights will be included to the event.

The Queen’s Cup has been held in honour of Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand on her birthday, August 12, every year since its inception in 1996.

Each year, a crowd of 100,000 spectators gather in the large open-air venue of Bangkok’s Sanam Luang (Royal Field) to pay their respects to their beloved Queen.

This is the card as I know it thus far:

Card details

Headlining the event will be Nonsai Sor Sanyakorn versus Fabio Siciliano of Italy.  Nonsai is a real muscular and strong looking Thai boxer.  Sadly, last I saw of him in action he got legitimately knocked out cold by a Chinese sanda fighter.  I suspect this is going to be his proving grounds to prove it was a fluke and it should be an interesting fight back with such high scrutiny. Nonsai could be having a lot to prove going into Queen’s Birthday on a main event fight.

Also co-main event will be Saiyoknoi Pumphanmuang versus Antuan Siangboxing. Saiyoknoi has sort of a death defying timing style and he makes fights interesting just by his risks that he takes and his ability to consistently pull it off.  In a weird way he’s reminiscent of Kaoklai at his best. This should be a pretty decent and thoroughly entertaining card by the initial looks of it. Of course per usual, a new world title has been created in the WMC One Songchai Queen’s Birthday title.

Muay Thai Expands Cooperation in Europe

Nak Muay at work

Ties seem to be increasing between Europe (specifically the UK and Thailand) for Muay Thai.

Peera Fongdawirat, vice-administrator of SAT, department of professional sports and privilege said that the office of boxing committee considered this  cooperation as beneficial. The ambitious undertaking includes:

  1. Make a standard Muaythai connection in England and Europe
  2. help standardize Muaythai trainers in foreign countries and make it more possible for them to work legally. Currently, there are many ex-boxers and Muaythai trainers teaching in foreign countries. This will help create income for personnel of Muaythai society.
  3. standardize foreign Muaythai institute
  4. exchange professional personnel (sportsmen and trainers) and support Thailand tourism
  5. open standardized Muaythai martial art course inside and outside of the country
  6. conserve Muaythai martial art as the uniqueness of international Muaythai

Mr.Peera explained that he has to travel to the conference of curriculum development and sign the contract of such cooperation in July-August at Manchester, England. He will also inspect the activities and Muaythai administration in Switzerland and France as the information for further development.

In my opinion this new cooperation can be a big positive so long as Thai powers avoid the temptation to create foreign power dominion in other countries. That has proven to be a pitfall for many such as the WMC lately.  The potential for this to be a very good thing for Muay Thai will hopefully outweigh some of the inherent dangers if this is not executed properly.

Fight Sport 8- Man Trailer Released

Fight Sport 8-Man Tournament Lineup

The UK is as always a very busy place for Muay Thai.  If you didn’t already know Dan Green is the man behind many spectacular cards in the past brought to you with MSA and also his own Dan green promotions of the past. To my knowledge this is the first time Dan has ever ventured into a tournament style fight card.  Should prove interesting. I reported on the full card here.  There are some decent matchups that could occur here especially given the level of talent on this card. It makes me pleased that despite MMA making steady in-roads into England they sure haven’t forgotten how to do some pleasing Muay Thai events.

Unlike a lot of 8-man tournaments of this nature this one is being conducted under full Muay Thai rules!

And now the trailer for the event:

For ticket information head to the official Fight Sport Industries website.
