Immortality Undisputed III

The upcoming card for Undisputed Immortality III is rapidly approaching.  With more promoters invoking a catch-all format for their respective events Invincible Promotions is showcasing Muay Thai and MMA on the same card. Personally, I don’t know that I care for that format but it cannot be ignored that more and more promoters are adopting that format to include a larger audience (hopefully successfully). The November 6th card appears to be fully solidified and McKinnon versus Mairano is confirmed.  Along with the main event the rest of the card is as follows:

Jay Habib Vs. Lee Henry

Joe “Crunch” Concha Vs. “The General” Bryan Hasse

Von “Bad Ass” Badato Vs. Michael Green

Shane Millarnis Vs. Rickey Rea

Michael “Bad Ass” Badato Vs. Jason Scerri (who has in the past traveled to the USA to fight)

Shannon “Shaggy” King Vs. Steve Moxon

Eric Nosa Vs. Shane Tilyard

Main Event

“God of War” Steve McKinnon Vs. Eduardo Maiorino for the WBC Muay Thai super heavyweight world title

Liam Harrison Versus Soishiro Miyakoshi from Thai Fight 2nd Round

Liam Harrison begins his ring walk

Much thanks goes out to Liam Harrison himself for providing this video.  Liam Harrison battles Soishiro Miyakoshi in the 2nd Round of Thai Fight the event held in Thailand featuring 16 international fighters of Muay Thai. Harrison would acquit himself well in this fight but was de facto disqualified after the fight had taken place due to being over the weight limit.  An interview should be forthcoming in which Liam will get a chance to explain the circumstances of the fight.  But until then enjoy the video.

Raouf Beliouz

Much thanks goes to Christian Luc for sending me this video of Raouf Beliouz versus Fahmai Skindew Gym. As many of you may already know Fahmai is ranked number 6 in Lumpinee Stadium and has in the past fought fought Anuwat Kaewsamrit. This bout took place in Paris, France this past October 29th, 2010 where famously Abdallah Mabel would fight for a Lumpinee stadium title in France.

Raouf Beliouz comes from France’s Derek Boxing Club which has been quietly and steadily been building its reputation as one of the better known clubs in France to train Muay Thai.

Ontario’s Ongoing Fight to Legalize MMA and Muay Thai

Ontario Flag

The fight for legal recognition of Muay Thai in Ontario, Canada is an ongoing one. And an update concerning the state of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Muay Thai is well overdue.  Earlier on in this debate, outgoing Canadian Medical Association president  Dr.Anne Doig was quoted as saying, “We are concerned when people engage in activities the sole purpose of which is to pummel, kick, punch, scratch, whatever methods they use, until somebody is seriously hurt or injured, or somebody cries uncle and submits.” From this statement one can see the fight for MMA regulation was not an easy one given the relative squeamishness and frankly ignorance Ontario’s provincial regulators seem to struggle with.

Despite these misgivings ultimately money and the potential of it  largely through the Ultimate Fighting Championship company has grown beyond ignoring.  Frankly speaking Ontario’s sports stewardship has recognized what it stands to gain economically. In the United States this legal recognition of MMA has translated into extension regulatory coverage and recognition of Muay Thai.  Initially this did not appear to translate quite the same with Ontario. From sec 83 of the criminal code there are 2 methods to facilitate local combat sports sanctioning:

1) Through the PSO/NSO/NF model

OR

2) Through direct permission from the Province (not requiring a PSO)

Apparently in Ontario the Muay Thai community has a growing sentiment of not really caring or hinging their hopes on the IOC’s inclusion of Muay Thai.  And in fact growing recognition of how little it really does to make Muay Thai ‘accepted’ or legitimate seems to be settling in.To be frank the smarter people in Muay Thai’s community in Ontario have come to realize that (Canadian Muay Thai Council – Amateur) CMTC-A is only trying to expand their sphere of influence. The people of Muay Thai in Ontario are very uncomfortable with its influence in Ontario. And rightly so since in essence a foreign based power will dictate Ontario policy should a PSO ever come to pass. And this movement did in fact have roots both in Calgary and the World Muaythai Council (WMC) and CMTC-A’s Robin Finley who has directly responded to my posts on this very topic on this site. The WMC’s role in this is very ironic since WAMTAC has publicly stated they initially were granted permission to operate under WMC’s umbrella of coverage until days later Stephan Fox reportedly revoked that coverage. Coincidentally CMTC-A based in Calgary where Mike Miles is also the Canadian WMC arm began moving towards pushing Ontario towards the PSO model.

Finley’s explicitly expressed stance was “MT like all other recognized and funded sports needs a national body, with provincial bodies, similar to the Federal/Provincial government structure. Like it or not, this is the only path to legitimacy, recognition and funding for ANY sport in Canada”. In other words CMTC-A pressed for a PSO model of regulation in order to even grant Ontario the right to have regulated Muay Thai fights.  Guess who would be helming that PSO organization?

Since that time Ontario has staged a Muay Thai amateur card through World Amateur Muay Thai Association of Canada (WAMTAC). On the surface this may not seem that meaningful until one considers that this was the first event in Ontario of its kind in over 2 years. And in fact this remarkable milestone was underscored by the fact it was successful despite last minute changes to the card. In fact a 2nd event is planned to take place in November.

De facto, the first WAMTAC sanctioned event this is what was found:  Muay Thai doesn’t need Calgary’s interference or WMC for Muay Thai events to happen or in fact begin to thrive. In Ontario, it has become apparent that the Crown Prosecutors have no issue with Muay Thai events being organized. WAMTAC’s adherence to safety regulation with insurance, medicals and ring side medical staff present including doctors were sufficient. By all reports WAMTAC has gone well beyond the minimal requirements and thus far no issues were experienced. Obviously, this has not pleased Calgary based CMTC-A who seem to my eyes to be operating on borrowed legitimacy and so will try to foist it in whatever means available to them still. With the amount of Muay Thai talent being produced in Ontario it would seem that is where much of the future lies in up and coming Muay Thai fighters. And in my opinion Ontario must be included in order to accurately gauge Canada’s Muay Thai future with anything resembling a complete picture.

So the good news first: Muay Thai is legal and regulated.  More good news, its in my opinion going to continue on that path and its unlikely any organization is going to stop it or force a fiefdom upon Muay Thai in Ontario. The bad news is there is still an active under current of squeamishness and the regulatory staff in place in Ontario are obviously untested with combat sports and there for sure will be bumps along the way.  Overall though this is a good start and I am optimistic about Ontario’s future in Muay Thai. Now if an initial step can be made to form a circuit for Muay Thai extending into the United States even more fighters and Muay Thai fans will have more to be happy about.

Luis Bio Set for Mexico WBC Title Fight

Luis Bio delivers a knee

More news is beginning to filter out with the WBC Convention scheduled in Cancun, Mexico.  WCK Muay Thai announced Luis Bio will be scheduled to fight for the Mexico WBC Muay Thai National Championship. Traditionally only boxing bouts are presented at the WBC Conventions but this time around on November 5th, 2010 for the wirst time the convention will have a Muay Thai bout. Luis Bio has made his mark fighting opponents such as Harris Norwood and Cyrus Washington (who recently competed at the Toyota Vigo marathon) stopping both fighters with TKO victories. In Sync productions will be sponsoring the WBC MuayThai Mexico’s National Middleweight title fight between Luis Bio and Alejandro Nunez.

Luis fights out of the the Boxing Club and is trained by Caine Gayle and Ron Casper, and ismanaged by Dennis Leung. Luis will be on national television in their home country for this event. NSync Productions looks yo maintain a fairly busy schedule with Luis Bio. ” I am looking forward to promoting Luis on Hainan Island, China, where Luis will be a part of the four-man tournament with the possibility of winning $10.000,” noted Dennis Warner, the president of In Sync Productions.

This is the first time Luis Bio of Ensenada, Mexico has been given an opportunity at a WBC MuayThai Mexico’s National Middleweight title. Now, with six wins and two losses, he will be stepping into the ring with an opponent from Mexico City, an undefeated Alejandro Nunez.

WBC conference fights will be televised live on Mexican television and live on the internet at WBCBOXING.TV

WBC boxing TV

WBC boxing.tv has been host to many past boxing events and ironically I watch it fairly often anyways so it should be a welcome change in pace to have some Muay Thai broadcast freely with a meaningful fight.

Evolution 22: the Return of Carnage Corbett

Evolution 22 poster

With much apparent anticipation Nathan “Carnage” Corbett will be making a return to the gold coast of Australia. Queensland has become the de facto capital of Muay Thai’s busy Australian circuit. Corbett has now fully grown into his new weight at heavyweight and now seems focused on fighting and winning championships. Corbett has previously campaigned at cruiserweight and his pretty much cleaned the division out by fighting and beating such notables as Kaoklai Kaennorsing, Clifton Brown, and Emmanel Payet among a long list of names he’s fought and beaten.

Recently, Corbett beat his first opponent under full rules Muay Thai at heavyweight Pavel Zhuravlylov of the Ukraine for the inaugural World Kickboxing Network (WKN) Australia independent sanction. Corbett would end up stopping Zhuravlylov by knock out during the 4th round. Corbett now would seem poised to make his name at heavy weight under full rules Muay thai though there had been rumors circulating about his possible participation in future K-1 events though it would seem all but a moot point with K-1 not paying many non-Japanese fighters.

Frankie Munoz

Corbett’s opponent will be Spain’s Frankie Munoz.  Munoz is now training at the famed Chakuriki gym in Holland under the tutelage of Thom Harinck. Harinck is best known for his prize student and former K-1 Grand Prix king, Peter Aerts. Chakuriki is now also the home of K-1 stars such as Jerome LeBanner recent winner of the World Professional Muay Thai Federation’s (WPMF) heavyweight Muay Thai title over Tomas Novack. And K-1 stalwart Hesdy Gerges also claims Chakuriki as training home base.

Also on the card is Eli “Mad Dog” Madigan and Bruce “Preacher” MacFie.  Matchups are still being made at the time of this writing and notably the WMC logo which is typically brandished prominently is absent from this poster. Whether this means that Evolution has elected to go with another independent sanction or not cannot be said. I will report on the card as it develops but early on it looks like the main event and what could become the rest of the card looks very promising.

Duel at the Dome

Dan Green and Fight Sport Industries return to bring another full rules Muay Thai event to the United Kingdom. Returning to action will be Simon Chu who we last saw in action at the MSA Muay Thai Premier League in Manchester where he picked up the UKMF middleweight strap. Dan Green will again be leveraging his international contacts and will be importing some of Holland’s own Vos gym fighters to make his card complete. This event takes place at Doncaster, UK November 27th, 2010.  The card known thus far is as follows:

Simon Chu (Kiatphontip) vs Cedric Bacuna (Vos Gym)

Imran Khan (Wicker and recently fought on the Toyota Cup) vs Andy Thrasher (Manchester)

Helene Garnett (Wicker, Doncaster) vs Orinta Van Der Zee (Vos Gym)

Dean James (Pra Chao Sua) vs Ilias El Hajoui

Mehdi Feroozi (Wicker) vs Marc Sargeant (Studio 2000)

John Aong (Chang Kow, Doncaster) vs Ant Ferguson (Minotaurs)

Paige Farrington (WKS) vs Rupsana Bequn (KO London)

James Ogden (Wicker) vs Mike Clarke (Tobins)

There is even a trailer up now for the event and it does indicate that Fight Sport Industries have been gathering ample amounts of footage perhaps enough to even do another DVD of their events. It looks like this particular event will get SKY Sports coverage.  Presumably ticket information will be available at the official Fight Sport Events web site. A video trailer for the event has been posted for viewing below.
