Petpayu Pinsinchai putting the work in

A while ago Saul Khan helped lead us all on a tour of the famous Pinsinchai Muay Thai gym of Bangkok, Thailand.  At the time of the original posting it was a very rare thing to get a look at Pinsinchai’s gym at all but it was announced then that there were plans for Pinsinchai to be open to all the public specifically including foreigners.  It looks like they are indeed ramping up to meet the visitors and have launched an official site.

As expected the training is still going to continue in the old fashioned, hard work ethic which Saul describes as ‘sadistic training’. Though its now more  tourist friendly its not going to be a soft experience at all. Also I cannot wait for some of the first time visitors reaction to the infamous goat of Pinsinchai.

The schedule is as follows:

Training is held 7 days a week, with no afternoon sessions on Sundays only.

  • 6 am – 9 am
  • 6-7 Running, skipping, interval training
  • 7-7.30 Shadow boxing, footwork
  • 7.30 – 8.30 Pad training, heavy bag training
  • 8.30 – 9 Body conditioning
  • 3 pm – 6pm+
  • 3 – 4 Running, skipping, interval training
  • 4 – 4.30 Clinch training
  • 4.30 – 5.30 Pad training, heavy bag training
  • 5.30 – 6 body conditioning
  • 6+ Advanced techniques

The gym is owned and managed by Police General Sawake Pinsinchai known for being a task master and probably one of the most decorated Police Generals Thailand has had in some time. It’s through Sawake’s supervision and operation of Pinsinchai’s camp that they have established a reputation of being hardcore even by Thai standards for Muay Thai training. Pinsinchai has been sought out by the most elite international Muay Thai fighters through the years. Pinsinchai has produced champions such as Thailand Pinsinchai and Burklerk who also operates a gym in Thailand under Pinsinchai’s banner and who could be correctly considered a legend himself.

Pinsinchai has also long been host to the Thaiboxing fights showcased on Thai TV’s Channel 9 broadcasts through Asawindum stadium. They often showcase the younger boxers who eventually will find their way into the bigger stadiums of Thailand. Pinsinchai’s fights are the proving ground for young Thaiboxers cutting their teeth and that hunger definitely is reflected in the fights. Many of those fights are right on this site.

There’s been attempts by outside interests to basically infiltrate Pinsinchai and turn General Sawake’s vision of Muay Thai into a more blatantly commercialized venture. But the General and his staff have recognized the importance of maintaining quality and their work ethic and have resisted such proposals. Pinsinchai may become more foreigner accessible but the work ethic is going to be a mainstay.

It will be interesting to see how the gym evolves now that foreigners are welcome to train with Pinsinchai. You can check out the Pinsinchai gym tour here.  And an interview with Pinsinchai’s young gun Petpayu here.

Nathan Corbett Scheduled to Appear on Domination 5

Nathan "Carnage" Corbett

It looks like its official now that Nathan “Carnage” Corbett has truly become a heavy weight.  Nathan Corbett will take on Pavel Zhuravlyov of the Ukraine for the World Kickboxing Network (WKN) Muay Thai  Heavyweight World Championship.  For those of you less familiar with Pavel, he has made prior appearances on K-1 even defeating Gokhan Saki who is regarded by many as the new K-1 heavyweight ace. Even prior to K-1, Pavel was a very decorated Muay Thai fighter and has more than an ample supply of ring and title credentials. WKN has a significant presence throughout eastern Europe so it’s no surprise WKN is beginning to import some of that talent to Australia.  It’s also becoming a better known fact that some of the world’s best Thaiboxers may lie in waiting in eastern Europe without much exposure to the west and the world. Maybe this is the first step towards expanding that exposure to the rest of the world with a fairly high profile fight in Australia.

Nathan Corbett has fought and beaten a virtual who’s who of Muay Thai cruiserweights including Kaoklai Kaennorsingh and Clifton Brown. This is literally a step up in weight and Pavel is a good quality opponent. Corbett dominated his part of the world in the cruiserweight division in fairly definitive fashion while in Europe Tyrone Spong made waves at the same weight. Both eventually met at Champions of Champions II in what was to be an inconclusive match with fouls and much controversy. Corbett is noted for his punishing elbows that have also resulted in highlight reel knockouts.

WKN appears to be acting on the opportunity that has now opened up with more and more Australian fighters no longer exclusively fighting for WMC.  It’s strange though that only WKN world title bouts appear to have full 3 minute rounds. I am still not sure what to make of that format but it’s definitely out of line with what other sanctions are formatting for rounds and for myself initially; I don’t like it. For sure many eyes will be watching the WKN for what happens under their sanction next.

Nuit des Champions With Kem Sitsongpeenong

Nuit des Champions

Coming November 26th, 2010  from Marseilles, France is the Nuit des Champions. The main event for this card will feature Kem Sitsongpeenong pitted against Mabel Abdallah, coming from the same camp as Fabio Pinca with Team Nasser K.  Mabel could be very accurately considered to be among one of the elite names of the French Thaiboxing scene.

Some of you may know that Kem had also a high profile appearance scheduled for the Dutch promotion It’s Showtime, kickboxing tournament on September 12th. Shockingly Kem suffered a loss by knockout. Though it was by kickboxing rules there is no questioning the outcome though Kem was a last minute substitute on the card. Apparently, the Sitsongpeenong camp is keeping Kem’s foreseeable future dance card very full of opponents. As some of you may already know Kem has been an S1 Champion, champion of the world with WMC, and Rajadamenern stadium champion.

Also scheduled to appear on the card are  Bruce Codron versus  Samir Petit and Pace Sebastien versus Ziemnicki Przemyslaw. Codron versus Petit is billed as a revenge match for the two while Sebastien versus Przemyslaw will be a title defense for Przemyslaw’s WKN’s European championship at 72.6 kg.  Apparently there isn’t the same stigma of mixing full contact kickboxing on the card with Muay Thai in France and many fighters there hold titles both in kickboxing and in Muay Thai. And its hard to argue that France isn’t one of the most dominant nations of Muay Thai in the west. The card at this point is still being completed but as an early indicator this looks like a very good start.

Battle Colossal XI

Much thanks goes to Phon Martdee for the announcement of this new card.  It looks like some pretty big names are to be expected to participate on this card including Steve Bonner and fresh off participating in Thai TV’s Thai Fight, Australia’s Jason Lea. Oley Sakonpetch will also be making a return appearance on Battle Colossal. Oley Is from the famous Saengmorakot gym. Sanegmorakot was voted Sportswriters’ Gym of the Year in 2004 for it’s incredible fighters and noted for the consistent wins. along with turning a steady stream of elite level Thaiboxers showcased via Jar Tui’s cards in Lumpinee stadium.

Though the card is still being made complete I expect some pretty decent talent to be coming and some WBC titles to be staked as well. What impact the recently announced convening of the WBC’s 48th convention will have on what straps can be staked around the world has yet to be made clear but I suppose that information will become public record following the convention’s end in November.

One day before Halloween the event happens at Curtin Stadium, Bentley. Perth WA.  The doors and the event are set to open at 6:00 pm. Early tickets can be bought in advance at the official Muay Thai promotions site.

I’ll keep the site updated on what other competitors make the Battle Colossal 11 card but early on this looks like it could be pretty exciting.

WKN Belarus Big 8 Tournament Results

Minsk Arena

Thanks to Bernard Caplin for sharing the results. In a very dominant run in the WKN Big 8 Tournament Sudsakorn Klinmee cleared out all of his opponents.  Those of you already familiar with Sudsakorn’s style already knows his death defying razor’s edge timing that he’s adopted since participating in international competition outside of Thailand.  Sudsakorn prior to that made his name in the stadiums in Thailand.

Sudsakorn in Rajadamnern stadium

Sudsakorn’s style makes matches exciting and I have to admit I even find myself wondering how long can he maintain his edge with the risks he takes with his timing. Even taking Sudsakorn’s methodology into account the tournament final found him facing off with as most expected against Andrei Kulebin.

Quarter finals results:

  • Andrei Kulebin ( Belarus ) wins  versus Taylor Harvey ( Australia )
  • Erkan Varol ( Turkey ) wins versus Mthobisi Buthelezi( Africa )
  • Sudsakorn ( Asia ) wins versus Michael Manaquill ( North America ).  Manaquill was a late replacement for Malaipet Sasiprapa.
  • Kushnirenko ( Europe ) wins versus Marcos Cornejo ( South America )

Semi-Final Results:

  • Andrei Kulebin ( Belarus ) def. Erkan Varol ( Turkey )
  • Sudsakorn Klinmee ( Asia ) def. Ruslan Kushnirenko ( Europe )

Final Result:

  • Sudsakorn Klinmee (Asia) def. Andrei Kulebin (Belarus) TKO (Doctor Stoppage)

Other Results

WKN Womens World Title
Joanna Jedrzjcyk ( Holland) def. Alla Ivashkevich ( Belarus)
WKN European World Title
Bogdan Lukin (Ukraine) def. Igor Klimovitch(Belarus)
WKN International World Title
Dmitry “Black Vallet” Valent (Belarus) def. Tarek Slimani (Marocco) by KO

It s good to see an event of this scale make it on to Eurosport perhaps filling the gap Its Show Time left when it vanished off of Eurosport broadcasts.

Rumble at the Reebok Card and Trailer Updated

Rumble at the Reebok

More fights are actively being added to the Rumble at the Reebok card scheduled for October 9th, 2010. The UK, as always is a very busy place for Muay Thai events and this one is scheduled to take place relatively soon after the conclusion of the Fight Sport Champions Trophy 8-man tournament.  Overall I like the UK approach to promoting.  To paraphrase the Field of Dreams quote: “Make good fights and they will come”.  The card thus far known looks like a fulfillment of that famous quote:

Kyle Nicol (from Lumpini Crawley) Vs. Steven Jones from Manchester.

Both have pretty decorated fight records and Jones is noted by the promoter to be known for being a heavy puncher.

Paul Bates Vs. Josh Turbill.

Josh Turbill fought and won a closely contested fight with Mike Egan and Paul Bates has been a veteran of Muay Thai nearing 2 decades now.

Ben Barwise Vs. Daitan Jackson.

This is basically billed as a revenge match for both fighters who also met at Rumble at the Reebok II in May with apparently neither being pleased with the split decision.

Paul Crossley Vs. John Gillies

Getting into the heavier boxers this match will be at 88 kg.

Liam Robinson Vs. Lee Green

This is a clash of the Welterweights. Liam is a Golden Belt Champion. Liam very recently completed competing at the 8-man  Champions Trophy event and acquitted himself very well. Lee is the son of 5 x World Champion Master Ronnie Green and has won IKF and AKA World Titles.

Lucy Payne Vs. Cassie Robinson

Lucy trains out of the world renowed Touchgloves Gym under 11 x World Champion Julie Kitchen. Lucy was recently crowned ‘Queen of the Ring’ at Ringmasters 2010. Cassie has been advancing in Muay thai champion and has won the UKMF title.

Rob Horrocks Vs.  Charlie Peters

Rob is coming off a win at Rumble at the Reebok II against Mason Harris. Peters recently won an IKF Title.

The official trailer is below and the team behind Rumble at the Reebok has even taken it upon themselves to do some interviews with some of the participating competitors.

Shyngarm Sit. Laolek Vs. Inzeenoi Sit. Sarawatpirapong

Asawindum Stadium

In Red: Shyngarm Sit. Laolek versus in Blue: Inzeenoi Sit. Sarawatpirapong at 104lbs at Asawindum Stadium’s May 3rd, 2009 event. Minor spoiler it’s a stoppage win but I noticed other things in this fight.

Watch the referee closely. Look at how closely the damage is paid attention to and how he monitors the boxer’s eyes while still accurately tracking the action in the ring. I wish I could import 10 of these referees to the United States.

Steven Wakeling Returns

I got a message about this from the Champions Club of Pattaya’s Bernard Caplin. By all expectations now apparently Steven Wakeling will be returning to Muay Thai in the ring.

Steven Wakeling made an early impression on the UK and world Muay Thai fan base on Dan Green’s Muay Thai event by beating Yingyai. Following that win Wakeling went on to fight and beat Australian standout John Wayne Parr and had a high profile fight with Lamsongkram Chutwatanna, with Lamsongkram winning that one. Wakeling is set to make the return at super middleweight and reportedly an opponent for Wakeling is being negotiated for the 76 kg category.

It’s good to see Steve back and I always wondered where he went since Wakeling is still a very young (I think) 25 years old and should have many good years of fighting ahead. The obvious question to be answered by Wakleing’s return is how much has the time off hurt or helped him? And can he be as dominating as he once was? Wakeling fights out of the Scorpions Gym in Leeds, England along with his brother and fellow nak muay Mark Wakeling.

At the The Champions Club 6 Steven Wakeling is scheduled to fight again as one part of the main event on January 8th, 2011. Also scheduled to appear is Joachim Carlson of Contender Asia fame. Joachim has been selected to participate as part of an 8-man tournament to be held also at The Champions Club 6.

Fight Sport Champions' Trophy

Despite some last minute lineup changes Dan Green succeeds in another high profile UK show.  Fight Sport Industries staged a very ambitious 8-man tournament with full Muay Thai rules and this time it was with some newer UK talent, a place rich in standout Muay Thai talent to begin with. By the initial looks of it this card was a very strong showing especially for the inaugural show from this promotion. I have to say there is some anticipation about what comes next but Fight Sport Events definitely is going into a a direction that will likely grow with this 1st card.

Quarter Final 1

Kevin Harper (Majestic) v Liam Robinson (Pra Chao Sua)

Liam Robinson wins via decision

Quarter Final 2

Kerrith Bhella (Firewalker) v Thomas McCormick (Wicker Camp). Thomas McCormick wins by KO in round 3

Quarter Final 3

Andre Kotsur (Kick Fighters, Belarus) v Tim ‘TNT’ Thomas (Naksoo)

Andre Kostur wins despite being new to the bigger weight class.

Quarter Final4

Dave Copestake (K Star) v Craig Dickson (SMTC)

Copestake wins

Semi Final 1

McCormick wins over Robinson

Semi Final 2

Kostur wins over Copestake

Final

Kostur wins over McCormick

Other results from super bouts

Damien Trainor wins in his WMC MAD super bout against Gianpietro Marceddu via KO.

Sunny Hira wins against Rajesh Sallan, apparently Sallan broke his ankle during this fight.

Rob Horrocks won his fight against Richard Waller on points

Dean James wins over Giang Hoang who was knocked down twice during the fight.
