La Nuit Des titans 2013 Tours

La Nuit des Titans’ team has put together a very early announcement of a planned card for February 2nd, 2013.  Time Fight promoters are apparently already looking forward to their next event following their October 6th, 2012 Time Fight 2 event. By all accounts the Time Fight 2 event was a successful one. This will mark the 7th installment for the Tours, France based promotion.

Some initial information is beginning to emerge about the latest fight card of Les Nuit des Titans promoted by El Hadj Mekedem Boxing Club and Tours.

Several of the participating fighters’ names are already known and it is that there will be a four man tournament as part of the event. The names shared by Time Fight promoters are Yohan Lidon, Aikpracha Meenayothin, Yuri Bessmertny and Ghajji Karim. The possible weight for the four man tournament is 72.5 kg/160lbs.

In addition to the tournament there will be fights in the single bout or Superfight. Expected to participate are Fabio Pinca, Amine Kacem, Aziz Hlali, Issam Reghi with other “surprises” Time to Fight promises will appear. Just looking at the date of the event though it may be something of a logisitcs issues since Aikpracha has been announced to also be participating on the Yokkao Exterme 2013 event. Aikpracha is expected to be fighting at 70 kg on January 26th at Yokkao.

On the past La Nuit Des Titans events the card did shift due to unavailability of some fighters. Buakaw Banchamek (por Pramuk) was due to fight but because of his unavailability due to Thai courts, Aikpracha Meenayothin stepped in and fought Fabio Pinca, a widely acknowledged high level French nak muay. Aikpracha has since then become an increasingly familiar face among Thailand’s best Muay Thai talents fighting internationally as well as being a current Lumpinee stadium title holder. Even a precursory look at any of Aikpracha’s recent fights will tell you his reputation of being a dangerous and skilled Thaiboxer is earned.

Yohan Lidon is one of France’s best known Thaiboxers having been a 3 time world champion in Muay Thai and kickboxing – including being the first ever It’s Showtime 73MAX world champion. Lidon has also faced Aikpracha in the past with a decision loss result from their Thai Fight Lyon meeting.

Yuri Bezsmertny has been very busy in the past fighting a virtual who’s who list in kickboxing and Muay Thai.  His most notable win was over Sudsakorn Klinmee at Fight Code in 2011. Bezmertny has been matched tough to say the least having fought Gago Drago, Edvin Kibutz, and Armen Petrosyan in the past.

Karim Ghaji is a French-Morrocan Thaiboxer who has also gained a higher international profile. He won K1 Pro French title, K1 W.P.M.F European title and F-1 World Max Tournament. Ghaji is also the current K-1 rules ISKA world champion.

Even without Aikpracha’s participation this card is looking a lot like the stuff of a fight fan’s fever dreams.  And with an undercard promising appearances from some of France’s best known and best Thaiboxers it looks like one of the early candidates for best matchmaking in 2013. Hopefully as in the past a pay-per-view stream will be put together and it’ll be more than worth it’s modest price to get.

USEACA Nov.17th card

United Southeast Asian Cultural Association (USEACA) has been quietly but progressively building a presence in the North Western United States. Under the combined leadership of Srab Srouey, John Chamkunthod. Kobb Thongsai, and others USEACA has been throwing growing events hosting fights in Kun Khmer and Muay Thai. November 17th USEACA returns with the 4th in the Showdown series. Headlining the event will be defending Ladies Showdown champion Ciara Irvine versus Macaulay.

In addition to growing fighters out of his own South Sound Martial Arts gym, Srab with USEACA has been regularly throwing cards and keeping young talent busy in the Northwest. At this juncture the USEACA events have become something of an institution in Washington and the Northwest United States. And the headline event looks like it will make good on making USECA Showdown the event to watch. As of this writing the card is still being sorted out but as the time draws closer to event time the card should be solidified.

Tickets are available from the official USEACA web site.

Muay Thai Warriors November 4th, 2012

Muay Thai Warriors returns on Sunday the 4th of November. Muay Thai Warriors will be continuing the theme of Nation versus Nation in this next event albeit at a much closer locale in Cambodia or modern day Khmer.

The last event was in China with a China versus Thailand theme. Notably, Saenchai PKSaenchaiMuaythai gym was matched against Chao Li Dao (China) for the Muaythai Warriors Super-lightweight belt. Saenchai won by elbow knock out in one round against his Chinese opponent.

This time around Muay Thai Warriors will be bringing a Thailand versus Cambodia event  on November 4th, 2012. The fights will be from Phnom Penh, Cambodia but will also be broadcast on Thai television channel 11 9:00pm Thai time.

Muay Thai Warriors makes one wonder if this is becoming a growing trend of international Muay Thai happening more with Thai promoters willingly becoming the away team. If it is the trend, I like it. By all appearances Muay Thai Warriors are well organized, well sponsored and making a logical leap, hopefully well funded.

The announced fight card is as follows:

Superbon Suppachai Lukchaomaesaiwaree (66kg) vs. Umar Ssemata s.Af (66kg)

Khim Di Ma (60kg) vs. Steeve “French Diamond” Archaumbault (60kg)

Rungravee Sasiprapa gym (60kg) vs. Juan Mario Spain (60kg)

Sen Bunthen (72kg) vs. Dmitri Ushkanov (72kg)

Plus an undercard featuring:

Kamen Picken

Victor Hot Chilli

Fapayab Kwaithong

Just in case you missed the Saenchai vs. Chao Li Dao fight, here’s the clip of the fight.

Enfusion 3 Slovenia Final in December 2nd, 2012

Enfusion Final 3

I was surprised to learn that not only is Enfusion still going strong but that the Enfusion 3 finale is fast approaching. Enfusion was the means that the international Muay Thai and kickboxing scene got acquainted with fighters like Pajonsuk (Thailand), Rick Barnhill (England), Armen Petrosian (Italy), Vuyisile Colossa (South Africa), Mikael Lallemand (France), Cyrus Washington (USA), Sucz Barnabas (Romania), Sahin ‘Kaas’ Yakut (Turkey), Goran Aleksic (Serbia), Jan Van Denderen (Belgium), Steve Moxon (Australia), Pasi Lukanen (Finland), Mirko Vorkapic (Slovenia), Bruno Carvalho (Portugal), Alex Tobiasson (Sweden), Frank Peredes (Peru), Shane Campbell (Canada), Gago Drago (Armenia)and probably the biggest name introduced to Enfusion, Cosmo Alexandre of Brazil. The reality show concept while for me can produce mixed results, does serve as an adequate vehicle for fighters to get exposure. And Enfusion to their credit does find credible fighters with ring earned reputations.

What follows is the lineup update for the finals Enfusion trial of the gladiator. The male finalists will fight at 85 kg weight class, a significantly larger size than what was seen on the prior installments of the Enfusion events.

The last 4 fights for the team captains and male competitors is going to take place in Ljublana, Slovenia. The promotional team behind Enfusion expect attendance of 5,400. There will also be an international roster of female fighters fighting at 60kg. Two names among the female fighters stood out to me immediately, Lindsay Scheer of Real Fighters Gym in Kentucky, USA and Lucy Payne of the United Kingdom and Touch Gloves Gym, home to Julie Kitchen a 14 times Muay Thai champion. Real Fighters Gym is noted for their emphasis on a Dutch style of Muay Thai and kickboxing which should prove an ideal style for this event.

These are the finalists competing in the 85kg male finals:

1) Franci Graijs

2) Andrew Tate

3) Ritchie Hocking

4) Sahak Parparyan

First reserve fighter Ville Aalto

Second reserve fighter David Radeff

1) Denise Kielholtz

2) Chajmaa Bellakhal

3) Lucy Payne

4) Lindsay Scheer

First reserve fighter Hatice Ozyurt

The reserves will only come to Slovenia, if somebody gets injured or cancels before the event.

Fight Night Winnipeg – Nak Muay Gym’s 1st Fight Card

Fight Night Winnipeg

If you’re in Winnipeg, Canada this Saturday, the first local amateur Muay Thai card of Nak Muay gym is on. All fighters made their weights and passed their medicals tonight for Fight Night.

The Main event will feature Double Dragon’s Michael Jude Ormond (5win, 1loss) fighting The Sweatshop’s Tom Le (China, via The Pas, MB ) in a 5 round modified Muay Thai rules bout. Little is known of Le, other than he is an experienced San Shou (Chinese Boxing) boxer who has competed in China and Vietnam.

Under card details are on the graphic below:

Fight Night card

The event uses Canadian Muay Thai Council -Amateur (CMTC-A) for sanction. They are the Canadian leg of the International Muay Thai Federation (IFMA). In general the event is in support of a unified sanctioning body across the country. CMTC-A is already the PSO (provincial sport organization) for Canada. The goal with the CMTC-A is to unify sanctioning in the nation ,  making fight records more relevant in confirming a boxer’s experience level, making for more competitive bouts.

In general I have been highly critical of independent sanctions and their various efforts and motives.  And I will continue to do so and advocate in my small way for what’s right for the sport. But at the end of the day if this effort creates opportunities for fighters and increases the transparency and therefore enables doing the right thing for Muay Thai, I favor it. And this is doing right by the sport as far as I can see.

It’s an effort shared by intent with Warrior Muay Thai’s story if not by coordination. Canada has a live and viable Muay Thai scene and events like these works towards ensuring Muay Thai can be fought anywhere in Canada legally and safely.

There are still some general tickets available at the door for $35.

Nak Muay Gym is Winnipeg’s newest Kickboxing/Muay Thai program. The gym is instructed by Coach Dave Zuniga. Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with 18+ years of competition and over 100 amateur/professional bouts in boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. He is also one of few Canadians that has had the privilege to compete in Thailand’s famed Rajadmnern and Lumpini stadiums

Journey Fight Series 8

In addition to the main card the Journey Fight Series 8 event has been updated with matches from the amateur under card. I have always been personally impressed with how well developed amateur fighters in Canada have been. The maturity in their style and tactical smarts betrays a deeper fight record than what may first be apparent. For the professional fighters, I have a more thorough breakdown of the participants here.

Adding to what looks like will become an action packed full rules Muay Thai tournament, Trevor Smandych may well have on his card the future of Canadian Muay Thai. I said the same thing ages ago to a friend when I watched Preston, Shane and the rest of the professional fighters coming up as young amateur fighters. I think I’m right here too.

Journey Fight Series 8: 160lbs Tournament Semifinals

Journey Fight Series 8 poster

Journey Fight Night is returning November 3rd, 2012 and will be continuing their series of the 160 lbs tournament into the semi-final round. Trevor Smandych, head of Team Smandych Muay Thai is now easily the most prolific and probably best known promoter in Canada. His events are growing and with a pay per view deal with gofightlive.tv you can see for yourself why. In the most biased way possible: it’s good to see Trevor Smandych keeping Muay Thai live and busy in the great north.

Looking at the match ups of Journey Fight Night’s 160lbs semifinals,  it could almost pass for a Toronto versus Alberta card featuring the best known fighters from both regions of Canada. Even though the fights are for a tournament it’s good to see the standard Muay Thai fight format of 5 rounds at 3 minutes each being used for all the tournament fights.

The card as of this writing is as follows:

5x3min Professional Full Muay Thai
“Shotgun” Sean McKinnon (Team Smandych, Calgary)
vs.
Preston Baptiste (M1/Diamond Muay Thai?, Toronto)

160lbs 8-man Tournament Semi-final Match

5x3min Professional Full Muay Thai

Shane “Shaolin” Campbell (Iron Tiger, Edmonton)
vs.
Troy Sheridan (Team Ultimate, Toronto)

5x3min Professional Full Muay Thai 140lbs

“Nasty” Nate Smandych (Team Smandych, Calgary)
vs.
Sean Kearney (Iron City Muay Thai, Vancouver)

The best known among all the competitors is Shane “Shaolin” Campbell, Starting with Iron Tiger and coach Alin Halmagean  in Toronto. Shane Campbell began his fight career at the age of 18 and continued fighting professional Muay Thai uninterrupted until October of 2010 when Campbell tried his hand at MMA with mostly winning results. After winning multiple titles and fighting good international competition including Chris Ngimbi and Panjunsk in the Enfusion kickboxing tournament of 2010, Campbell was busy fighting in the Canadian MMA circuit. His first return to Muay Thai was in the opening round of the Journey Fight Night series where he defeated Nate Chambers by stoppage.

Toronto fighter, Troy Sheridan is coming to the match with a 5-0 record, 3 of those wins coming by knockouts. Sheridan, like most of the Canadian fighters, has a deep history of amateur fights and wins.  It will be interesting to see if Sheridan maintains his momentum of wins against the fighter most observers will view as the most formidable competition on the card.

Also from Toronto and coming out of a tournament first round with a win is Preston Baptiste. Baptiste edged a split decision over Marcus Fisher. Baptiste’s opponent is Calgary’s own Sean McKinnon who made his entry into the 2nd round by stopping last minute replacement Rhys Jones.

In a non-tournament fight Nathan Smandych (Trevor’s younger brother and team mate) will fight Sean McKearney of Iron City Muay Thai.  Sean is the sole Vancouver fighter on the card. He recently fought and beat the United States’ Arthur Barkaukas, a student of legendary Thai nak muay Jongsanan.

Let it never be said Trevor showed favoritism towards family. In the past Nathan Smandych has fought Justin Greskiwiecz.  This time around Smandych will be rematched against Kearney, who he lost to albeit by split decision. This is an interesting match up with a built-in storyline into it. And for sure Trevor has no problem seeking out tough opponents for Nathan.

The  amateur undercard details are yet to be released.  For more information check out www.journeyfightseries.com with ticket purchasing information.

Kaensak Sor Ploenchit is a Muay Thai veteran of legendary status. Yes, that root word is used too often ‘legend’. But the term applies to Kaensak and to some others it obviously doesn’t. Yokkao Extreme 2013 Arrives in January

Yokkao Extreme 2013

I’ve been following the Yokkao promotions with a watchful eye. Per usual, I am always cynically watching the latest promotional effort fueled by good intentions and a lot of bad ideas. I watch and wait.  For the next misstep that ends disastrously for both fighters and promotion. But the Thailand based promotion keeps rolling along with high profile fights internationally specifically with Italian partners. The Team has leveraged their Thai and international contacts to put on consistently high profile fights albeit not always under Muay Thai rules. With that said I admire the promotional arm of Yokkao for taking chances and putting on consistently high profile and high quality fight events. If they are succeeding, it’s because they’re smart enough to stay profitable and gutsy enough to make big fights people want. That’s something for any Muay Thai fan to be happy about.

Recently,  the Thai and Italian joint effort completed their Yokkao Selection 2012 fights in Italy.  The tournament bouts were held to determine which of the fighters would go on to fight in their respective weight classes of 65kg, 70 kg, and 72.5 kg. From what I’ve seen of the names that will appear at the Yokkao Extreme 2013 card, they better be ready. They all have some tough fights ahead of them.

After coming close to selling out in January 2012, Yokkao Extreme is back in Italy Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Forum of Assago in Milan, Italy. The Main event will feature Andy Souwer, Shootboxing and K-1 MAX multiple time champion versus Dzahbar Askerov of Contender Asia fame and a growing resume of fights and wins, including becoming the World Muaythai Council (WMC) Muay Thai Welterweight European champion and K-1 MAX Scandinavia 2008 tournament finalist. Though it’s not really explicitly said yet, I am predicting this fight will be matched under K-1 rules.

Andy Souwer Vs. Dzhabar Askerov

The matchmaking for Yokkao Extreme 2013 definitely made some real efforts to make their event in Italy a memorable one. Among the many name nak muay to appear at 70kg, Aikpracha Meenayothin, will be making a first time appearance for Yokkao. Aikpracha drew international attention to himself by defeating Fabio Pinca, Yohan Lidon and knocked out Holland’s Marco Pique. Yokkao’s press writeup says his next opponent will be the same world class caliber.

Also coming to Yokkao Extreme 2013 to fight a Muay Thai Full Rules bout will be Kem Sitsongpeenong. With a 135+ fights, Kem is the reigning Thailand and World Muaythai Council (WMC) Muaythai super welterweight world champion.

Another big name Thaiboxer, Saenchai Muay Thai Gym is also scheduled to fight in a full rules Muay Thai fight. Saenchai, is at this juncture a living legend of Muay Thai. Saenchai arrives with a fight record including over 300 matches, with more than 250 victories. It should be a test for Yokkao to find an opponent worthy of the man considered to be the pound for pound best in modern Muay Thai.

Last will be the always fun to watch Sudsakorn Sor Klinmee with ring experience of 289 fights and a pretty impressive 244 wins. Recently, Sudsakorn won the Intercontinental belt TK2 World Max title. Sudsakorn definitely is fan friendly to watch with his razor sharp timing and hands down style. The sometimes he gets hit and sometimes he doesn’t suspense always makes a viewer friendly fight.

If you missed the Yokkao Selection qualifier fights, Yokkao has them free on their youtube channel. And if you want to attend the live event you can buy tickets directly from them from the Muay Thai Combat site.

Here’s a bout with Calogero Palmeri Vs. Alessandro Rammazatti from the Yokkao Selection tournament.
